Howdy from the road! That’s why I’m up so early. It’s time to head off to my intended destination before I mosey back toward home while gawking at the foliage. Great news for y’all: this is song #50. Yes, this is the halfway point. Take a deep breath and I’ll be done with this before you know it. Here’s today’s song. Mayor of Simpleton - XTC I’d call these guys a one-hit wonder, with this being the only song they ever had hitting the US Hot 100; however, it was pretty low on the Hot 100. They never made the top 40. Despite that, you’d be amazed how well-loved and popular these guys are in the “college rock” area. Super catchy pop tune, so what’s not to love. Well, in 1989, we had hair bands, so maybe that was the problem. At any rate, I love this song (along with their other oft-played FM/college rock song, “Senses Working Overtime”). Hope you like it, too. Mayor of Simpleton Written by Andy Partridge Recorded by XTC From Oranges and Lemons, 1989 Peak chart position: #72 Today’s country song: “Long Black Veil” Mathematics, well, I want none:

It's my style of music, but this song does not make the cut.

@porwest — yes, along with ear plugs. Or if you’re into torture, just skip the song and stick your head in a vice.

@FourWalls I don't think I have any aspirin in the house. Just acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Will those do?

It’s got that cool 80s post-punk feel to it that I really like.

I think it happened, i wonder why there are one hit wonder, is it because they are overwhelmed by fame, or too destructed by their hit song and no space for them to create one?

Andy Partridge (lead singer, primary songwriter) had stage fright so extreme that he had a nervous breakdown. They were popular in other countries but never caught on in America.
