Well, lookie who’s back! Your favorite duo, Dolly!
(Funny aside: there’s a great top ten list of Dolly Parton’s pet peeves from Letterman, and she said that one of the pet peeves was “I get introduced as ‘here they are, Dolly Parton!’”
) Same album as before, too! Let’s get going with another great country song.
My Blue Tears - Dolly Parton
Well, truth be told, this is far more bluegrass than country. While “Coat of Many Colors” is far more personal, Dolly has gotten a lot of mileage out of this song. She re-recorded it with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris for the Trio album (Ronstadt had also recorded it herself), and then she re-recorded it with Duran Duran’s Simon LeBon for her “rock” album. (Personally, I think Dolly was more rock when she didn’t try to be…see “Potential New Boyfriend.”)
This is the way bluegrass usually is: bouncy, happy, upbeat tune with heartbreak lyrics. What’s not to love!
My Blue Tears
Written by Dolly Parton
Recorded by Dolly Parton
From Coat of Many Colors, 1971
Peak chart position: #17
Today’s rock song: “Moonlight Gambler”

Now why’d you do that? You really expect Dolly to be anything but the real deal????

It was actually this song that she covered.

I wonder how much of her earlier music is known these days. And yes, Trio was a powerhouse.

While her body has seen a lot of plastic surgery, her talent is genuine.
