Has everyone taken a deep breath after the election? Cried? Celebrated? Okay, then let’s get back to being the best people we can be. My life was only different yesterday because my car’s still in the shop.
Well, that, and I let you have the day off from country music.
Let’s return to my 100 favorite charted songs from the country music side with this classic.
Set ‘Em Up Joe - Vern Gosdin
This is not only a great song, it’s an ode to one of the great singers of country music history, Ernest Tubb. The title is a play on Tubb’s song “Two Glasses, Joe,” and the song that gets played to death (“every day they replace ol’ B-24 ‘cause every night I run a needle through ‘Walkin’ the Floor’”) is Tubb’s signature song, “Walking the Floor Over You.” (Spoiler: Tubb will be along soon, but with neither of those songs.
)
Yes, this is what country music is all about: playing country music and crying in your beer.
Set ‘Em Up Joe
Written by Hank Cochran, Dean Dillon, Vern Gosdin, and Buddy Cannon
Recorded by Vern Gosdin
From Chiseled in Stone, 1988
Peak chart position: #1
Today’s rock song: “The Rubberband Man”
They got ol’ Hank and Lefty:

I can see you typing as quickly as you can to get out of here.

I’ll send Lou a text, she should be back by now.
