The idiocy of some people is truly remarkable. I mean, we had a plan for a particular dessert to make and bring for our Thanksgiving dinner we'll have with the fam on the 8th of December, and found this cake icing in the back of the pantry. We opned it and had a cupplw odf finfewerfulss of otr and it wqas just dfinwe. Not gointa gfewt me fools! Weere usiying it up and going ta maekje this sdewwsset come hellk oe jigh warer and all is gowould. Onwaawerd ans upoward ands I'll cee ya on theeee ottttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt

@NJChicaa What? You have to be kidding me. I mean, here's a guy who finds cake frosting that expired five years ago, defies the expiration date, eats said frosting, writes about how stupid expiration dates are, and while he's writing about it begins to experience a situation before he passes out. You must have been in a zombie state.

Five year old expired frosting. Put two and two together.

Jim, are you okay? It looks like something with four legs wrote that.

If he ate it and it’s over 5 years old, maybe he actually grew some more legs!!

LOL! It's usually okay and only a recommendation. I think it may have fried your brain though! What an odd result!!

@porwest We have had the same experience. I always open and examine and if it looks okay taste it. Haven't gotten ill from it yet.

@kareng Me either. If it smells good and tastes like it's supposed to taste...it's good.

On a more serious note, yes, I agree with you, and have spoken on expiration dates and the fallacy of them more than once here. Most things are still good long after they expire. We actually did open it up and gave it a sniff and a taste, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it that I can tell. But of course, I couldn't resist the joke. lol

I keep food long past the "best by" dates because they're best by - not poison after - dates. Do you know how old EGGS are when they even get to the stores?? Yeah - things can go bad. And, if you know what to look for or know to suspect funny smells, you'll be fine. Is the can swollen? Don't use it. Candy doesn't go bad - period. Chocolate turns white, but that's the cocoa butter coming out. Not spoiling. Flour can get weevils. Can still be eaten, but I get not eating it. I've used some really old food. I know better than to use anything that smells bad or has been chewed into by mice. I know people who throw things out the day the "best by" date hits. Reason? My husband has been sick and we can't take the chance. Yeah, ok. Things can go bad BEFORE the best by date - so use your damn brain!!

Yeah, I have never fallen for the expiration dates either. I worked in the food industry for too long and understand why they are there. I have worked for Coca-Cola, Kraft Foods and Nestlé. Incidentally, the real story is that the five year expired frosting is absolutely fine. It smells and tastes exactly like it were fresh yesterday.

Absolutely hilarious side- effects. I wish I'd thought of this stunt first. But you beat me to it.

It just struck me when we pulled out the five year old frosting. "What would happen if I ate it and it was no good?" And then I wrote it. I am amazed quite a few people did not get the joke and are still a bit confused by it. It seems so obvious. I think they are Biden/Harris supporters. It's harder for them to see obvious things and think things through, you know. lol

I usually pay little attention to expiration dates except for dairy, etc. Have a good weekend.

Absolutely. I have written many times here and elsewhere on the myth of expiration dates when it comes to most things. For example, I have used eggs that were a month past expiration and there was nothing wrong with them. But of course, I couldn't resist the joke. It was, after all, the icing on the cake.

We refer to those as sell by dates. Even the best buy dates.

Yeah. Ultimately, and I have written about this before, expiration dates are mostly meaningless depending on the item. I've even used eggs a month past the expiration date and there was nothing wrong with them. I know a few secrets about expiration dates and true shelf life having worked many years in the past in the food industry working for Coca-Cola, Kraft Foods and Nestlé.
