Convents and monasteries for randy guinea pigs

We have offered to house-sit at our niece’s place in April and June. There are two cats which are very shy and aren’t often seen, and six guinea pigs. The story I love about the guinea pigs is that the family originally bought two which they thought were both males. However, soon there were babies and now there are two pens housing six guinea pigs. The four females are in a pen which has been labelled the ‘convent’ and the two males are in a pen called a ‘monastery’. I think these are very appropriate names for their yards. I’m looking forward to meeting the guinea pigs soon although we won’t be going there to house-sit until late April. The photo is of guinea pigs at Perth Royal Show. I think you're looking at its front end!

The names of the guinea pigs´ houses are funny, considering the "children". Guinea pigs are nice.

The names are for the enclosures, not the animals themselves. So the females all live in the convent and the males live in the monastery.

That guinea pig is a hippy isn't he? Lots and lots of lovely long hair. I love the names that they have for the pens, very cute.

Our nephew who has the goats has about 100 of them. It was really foolish of him to allow them to breed so indiscriminately. They are costing quite a bit to feed and he can't seem to sell them.

I have never ever seen a guinea pig ..even in zoos...the picture you uploaded makes me want to own one. LOL...Hopefully they are not stinking and dirty. Let me read some on them. You enjoy your stay with them. Animals manage to bring out a smile...even when bank balances deplete...that is what is strange. LOL

@vandana7 Yes, they are a delicacy there. Maybe in other South American countries too but certainly in Peru.

They are clean little creatures. In Peru, they are bred in large numbers and eaten.

@judyev That’s one hairy guinea pig. I love them. Had quite a few of all sorts of colours as a child.

Our nephew, the one with the goats, has around 100. I think they are all short-haired.

@xFiacre He is trying to get rid of some. I was thinking he should contact a Peruvian restaurant if he can find one. I don't why he ever bought them. He is so busy with goats, etc then goes and buys guinea pigs! Really??

Don't think I've seen a guinea pig. The one in the picture is very hairy. Are all guinea pigs very hairy?

There are short- and long-haired guinea pigs. These are quite typical of the short-haired ones.

I am glad there is more than one of each gender. My great niece tells me that they are social and need at least one other. She went to a rescue intending to adopt two female and they had three so she took them all so one would not be lonesome.

How fun that must have been to have little babies. I had baby hamsters growing up but have no experience with Guinea pigs.

I think most are short-haired but people always want to change species and breed for special characteristics.

My nephew has around 100. It's a bit silly given he has so many goats. He rarely sells any and they just keep breeding.

They are good people with four boys (12-21), all on the spectrum although three are pretty good now and coping better. They deserve a break and it won't hurt us.
