Margaret and the Hollywood Market

I happened to come across an article in Idaho Press about a lady I knew back in the late 80s. My now ex, my daughter, and I used to live in a brownstone apartment in the North end at about 8th street (nearer to town than where my daughter and I now live at about 36th)There was a small market that we frequented about 4 blocks away. The proprietor was a little old lady named Margaret. She was a dear thing. Friendly and nice, she was there every day with a smile and a positive word. She often let us buy food items on credit and then we would pay her when we got our paycheck later in the month. She really saved us several times in letting us get food on credit when we didn't have a dime to see us through. I'm sure that she did that for many other families in the area as well. We left that area in about 1993. I found that in the spring of 2011, she started having trouble with her mobility and there came a point where she could no longer communicate her needs and a petition was written up finding her incapacitated. No one came forward, the Idaho Magistrate accepted the petition, and a temporary guardian was appointed. On May 9, 2011, the market was closed and Margaret went into an assisted living facility. Later the writer of the article found out that she had been in a psychiatric hospital twice before she was finally transferred to St. Luke's where she died. On June 25 a candlelight vigil was held outside the market where many friends and customers told stories and remembered her to her son who was present. He has cerebral palsy and lives in a nearby facility. It seems that Margaret had owned a minimum of 9, and could be 11, rental properties around the area in addition to the Hollywood Market. In the 1990s she had negotiated a $1.3 million deal on a 360-acre farm out in Kuna(a nearby small town)to an investor. Her sole focus in life was taking care of her son and making sure he was taken care of after she was gone. She was 95 when she passed. A funeral was held on June 29th. She had told a friend that if she left the store she wouldn't last long. That prediction had been correct. How sad to hear of this great lady's passing. I can still see her smiling face. I see that a yoga and massage place has moved in the market building but they retained the name and it is The Hollywood Market Yoga and Massage. A lasting tribute to a saintly lady. Sounds like she was a great lady and still it was a blessing to live to 95. I like that they kept the name,

She sure was great. I wish I had known of her passing sooner.

What a kind woman to have known in your slice of life back then. She did quite well for herself outside the little market - wow, all those properties! She lived a long life and sounds many had fond memories of her.

She was such a sweet, unassuming lady. Rarely ever saw anyone else in there working. Just her most of the time.

That's sad about her ending. What a story she had and obviously a lovely lady.

Yes, it was sad. I had wondered several times what had become of her and the market. Now I know.
