Nasty Cigarettes

My daughter is still trying to quit smoking. She is 53 years old as of October and has been a smoker since she was 13. Forty long years of smoking to relieve stress and out of boredom sometimes I think. I can only imagine what her lungs must look like now. She comes inside(I don't allow smoking in the house.)and just reeks of cigarettes. It is such a nasty habit. She labors to get up the stairs here and breathes heavily. It is horrible to witness.
I remember we moved into a different apartment years ago now and the kitchen walls were a yellowish tinge from nicotine. I scrubbed those walls for days to get that off. Ugh!
I looked up the price of cigarettes back in the 80s which would be when she started. An average price was $3.01 and a carton was $18.00(today's price would be $104.26)
Several months ago(after one of her attempts at quitting) she asked me if she could get a pack of cigarettes. I am her payee and "No" came out of my mouth instantly. She's an adult and all but I just want so much for her to quit. It's a mom thing I guess but I am glad I have the payee thing going for me.
Then the other day she came to me with a coupon for $1.50 off on a pack. I weakened and said she could thinking that would make the price $5.22 instead of what I thought the price still was $6.72. For some reason, the coupon didn't work and the 2025 price is now $7.52. If she bought a pack every day like she used to that would be $225.60 a year. Oh, no! I discussed it with her and told her I could not see paying that and she is going to try again to quit.
I feel like a dictator but am also glad I have a payee thing in my favor. I take care of her finances. I used to write articles about COPD and the effects of smoking on the body. It was good pay and I sure learned a lot about the subject. But those days are gone.
So, do any of you have any ideas that might help her to quit?

Honestly, I think she will only quit when she decides to quit. That being said, I hope she WILL quit.
My dad was a heavy smoker since he was 15. No matter what anyone said or tried, he kept smoking. It is interesting that he never got lung cancer or any lung ailments. But he ended up with rotted teeth, bad skin, high blood pressure, kidney issues (1 stopped functioning), and shrinking veins (it all gets bad when your blood cannot properly circulate anymore). He finally quit in his late 70s, but it had already taken a toll on him . . . he suffered in his last month and passed away at 82.
It might be hard to understand when one feels healthy while smoking, but maybe knowing more horror stories of what can transpire down the road could plant the seed to consider quitting for good.

My grampa smoked Salems for years. I watched him die of emphysema. She wants to quit but after so many years it's a struggle.

@celticeagle Its hard, especially when you/they know they could have possibly lived longer and stayed healthier had they stopped smoking. I hope your daughter can find a way to quit smoking for good.

@much2say .......I do too. I hate to see my grandson and how it will affect him to see his mom with COPD.

She'll only quit when she decides to fight hard enough to quit.
My dad said he started smoking a pipe when he was 9 years old. He quit when he was 69 years old. He had a heart attack about a year later and passed away on his 70th birthday.

And she won't fight very hard. I think she likes smoking.Your poor dad.
I relate to my love of chocolate. It would be extremely hard for me to quit eating it.

@DaddyEvil .........It really is. I think about how hard would be for me to give up chocolate. We eat way too much sugar here.

@celticeagle It's really hard to give up something you love.
I know sugar is bad for me but I still eat a little candy or drink a soda a couple of times a month.
