Another minor hiccup with our motor-home

Edit: I've just realised this discussion is much the same as the l ast one but with a few more details. Feel free to skip it! We have a new-to-us motor-home. We bought it in late November so were keen to go away for a short trip to get used to it and test it out. However, it wasn’t the best idea to take it away when our summer temperatures were so high. The air-conditioning in the cabin worked well, fortunately, but we had booked into a caravan park a couple of hours away. It was well over 100F when we left and the temperature gauge on the engine seemed to be a bit high. We couldn’t book into the park until 2pm so we sat under a shady tree for a while with wet towels round our necks. As the temperature gauge never got past a certain point, we now think that that is probably its normal temperature. Then, a fitting under the hand basin gave way meaning we weren’t able to access any water. Luckily, we had a 2 litre container with us. We'll take the vehicle to a repair place and it will be fixed at the seller's expense. The second day was much the same as the first as regards the heat. I drove it for a short distance on one of the back roads. It is basically a four-ton truck and I found it wider than an ordinary sedan but I'm happy that I’ll be able to drive it to relieve Vince sometimes. The photo is of salt and pepper shakers we saw in the Collie Museum which I’ll eventually write about.

It sounds like a fun adventure for your first trip in the motorhome. Extreme heat and plumbing issues do not look ideal and could be troublesome but then the good thing is repair is covered. Also, air conditioning worked plus you have all important backup water supply – those are definitely small winds on a hot trip. I have never driven a large vehicle. So driving and getting comfortable such a large vehicle could be challenging, but then good to read you are adjusting and confident on same. Looking forward to read more about the places you are visiting in it! Have a great time!

Thanks for the kind remarks. Us and the vehicle will get used to each other after a few trips.

Hope these are just teething troubles, but I would be a bit more worried about the engine temp!

Fair enough but even starting off when it was cooler, it got to the same point quite quickly then didn't go above it so we think that's just how it is.

@Ronrybs Don't worry. It's on my 'things to check and worry about' list.

It appears that every trip may have some bumps. I believe there are no trips that go flawlessly. There will be hiccups, so you will just have to adjust and enjoy it when the opportunity arises. I hope that you are able to resolve your issues along the way.

You're quite right, of course. Every trip brings its little challenges.

It looks to me as if some of those salt and pepper shakers on the top row have been feuding... or at least disagreeing with their partners.

My Mum had salt and pepper shakers that were turkeys but the holes were under their tails which looked a bit off!

Be careful out there in those back roads and bring more water than you could possibly need just in case.I saw a show about a family broken down in the outback. They had to walk and they, especially one of their daughters barely made it.

@JudyEv Usually they just figure in their location they will never be found, off the road, down in a ravine or something. Having signal flairs and those satellite phones would probably also be an excellent idea as well.

@snowy22315 For isolated areas, they also recommend carrying an Epirb - emergency position-indicating radiobeacon.

That's excellent advice but I guess there are back roads and then there are back roads. We will be sure to have plenty of water and, if we'll really in the outback and break down, we'll stay with the vehicle until someone finds us.

I'm glad the motor home is comfortable for you to drive, too. I'm sure Vince will appreciate not having to do all the driving. Years ago, I owned a Daytona and hated driving my wife's Cadillac Seville. It felt like I was taking up both lanes of the road driving her car. She complained about driving my car but always took it instead of driving her own.

I get a bit anxious about holding up other drivers. That is the part I'll find most difficult I think. But we'll try to choose quiet roads for my 'turns'. We're not planning marathon trips so I'm sure it will all work out okay.

@JudyEv Why worry about other drivers? As soon as they realize it's an older person driving, they won't worry about it.

It seems whenever you get a "new to you" vehicle there are minor things that must be seen to right away.

Love the cats! (Lower shelf) I’m really glad you feel comfortable driving it. I’ve driven a “class B+” motorhome before and it feels gigantic. I’ll stick with my little crossover SUV.

I can see you both sitting under that shade tree with the wet towels around your neck. I like the salt and pepper shakers.

Hopefully this will be the last of the hiccups. Shakers would be a good thing to collect being small - except there is always two of them. lol
