Last stop in Plains, I promise. It’s easy to see everything in a town that small. Of course, a great deal of it is related to their most famous native son, the 39th President of the United States. Here are a few leftover photos. Top left is the entrance to the home President and Mrs. Carter lived in from 1961 until their deaths (except for the few years in the governor’s house in Georgia and the White House in DC). It was the only residence they ever owned. That’s pretty amazing. What you see there is the gated entrance, with a little of the Secret Service office (the white building) showing. Now that the president has passed away, efforts will begin to turn this area into part of the national historic park as well. You can’t talk about Jimmy Carter without mentioning brother Billy. I guess most families have a “black sheep,” and that was Billy. This is the gas station he owned and operated in the 60s and 70s. On the bottom left are a couple of bags of peanuts that are given out free of charge at the welcome center, along with the National Park Service pamphlet on Plains. And at right is the opportunity I took to pose with Carter in the welcome center. As I’ve said before, I didn’t vote for him in 1980 (I was too young in 1976); however, I don’t think even his most bitter political enemy can deny that James Earl Carter Jr. was a remarkable man who walked out his faith every day. It was an honor to visit his hometown.

Gosh, only ever owning one house. I must count up how many we've lived in one day.

I can relate. I’ve been nearly 36 years in my house.

@JudyEv — the Navy and my dad’s wanderlust had me moving enough for three lifetimes. Think that’s why I’ve stayed put here.

@FourWalls We were 20 years in Donnybrook. That's the longest we've ever stayed in one place.

That would be so great. I read where he and his wife are buried under a willow tree on their property.

@celticeagle — yes, to the public, not “come on in and look at this casket six feet down in the ground.”

They’re hoping to have the gravesite opened in the summer.

I was too young in ‘76 to vote for him too! To be honest, I don’t remember much about him, other than him being a peanut farmer. Now you’ve got a President who is just plain nuts! I love the reference to Fantasy Island. I do remember watching that back in the day. Sounds like you had fun visiting his old town, and free bags of peanuts are just the icing on the cake!

I never watched Fantasy Island, but who didn’t know that line! Yes, our president is nuts (with apologies to the food). As he’s intimidating a commonwealth nation (Canada), I wish your king would offer to take us back as British colonies…just on general principles.

@FourWalls The grass isn’t any greener over here unfortunately. I’m not a fan of the royal family, so you can have our king if you want. I’m not sure where the best place to live is, but it sure isn’t here. Why am I here, I hear you asking me? Laziness is the answer.

@Orson_Kart — nothing for or against Chuckie, I’d just to see how our goofball would appreciate someone eyeballing our country as some charm bracelet token….

It really is. Millions of them…just not too many that claimed a resident who was president.

Can’t eat them because of diverticulosis. Going to give the squirrels the contents of the sample bags.

Indeed he was. I don’t think we’ll ever see the likes of him in politics again.
