Well…technically Monday afternoon now, because I’ve been goofing off at lunch. But it’s Monday, blah. And, for you hard-working folks who wonder, YES, retired people don’t like Mondays, either. New Zealand’s Bug of the Year Spits Poison Goo. How’d you like to be eating and look up and see THAT headline on TV? Apparently New Zealanders have a “bug of the year,” and this year they chose the velvet worm. Scientists claim it’s older than the dinosaurs! (So this poison goo-spitting worm, not a meteor, killed the dinosaurs! ) I’ve been working on the “years ago” music countdowns that’ll start with the new month in March. It’s been 50 years now since I started listening to rock and roll in earnest, so the 1975 list was the easiest. The 1985 list will have you shaking your head more than you usually do over one of my countdowns. And, since I turn 65 this year, we’re going back to that magical year of 1960. That’ll all be spread out (maybe 65 and 55, too) over a couple of months. Speaking of music, I saw that the great Roberta Flack passed away this morning. If Billy Preston was the king of Afros in the 70s, then Roberta Flack was queen. Some worthless trivia for you: her big hit “Killing Me Softly With His Song” was about Don McLean, inspired by co-writer Lori Lieberman seeing McLean in concert in 1971 and being overwhelmed by his song “Empty Chairs.” You’re welcome. Shades of 2005, I’m checking the news every hour about the pope’s health. I saw something that said a lot of people said that Francis was “the only pope they’ve ever known.” Sheesh, then what did that make John Paul II? He was pope for 27 years. Anyway, for those of you who are young and Francis is “the only pope you’ve ever known,” thanks for making me feel old! Back in 2005, there was a vigil as John Paul II’s health failed. That is what this reminds me of. The picture has nothing to do with any of this. It’s the Buc-ee’s Beaver. They have one of these at every Buc-ee’s I’ve been to. This one is from our newest one in Kentucky, about 15 miles north of Bowling Green. Y’all have a great day!!!

I think it’s still morning by the myLot clock. Roberta was 88. What great music she gave us.

We saw Roberta Flack in a concert in a vineyard but I think she was past her best at that point. Another great loss for the music world.

@JudyEv Seeing as you were in a vineyard, Judy. I hope it wasn’t a case of “sour grapes”

Indeed she was. I know that a lot of the country singers I saw as a child were past their prime, but I’m thankful that I got to see them!

@Orson_Kart She was of a certain 'vintage' even when we saw her.

Roberta will go down in history as a classic, for sure for her music contribution to the world.

No doubt about it. Anyone who tried to do “Killing Me Softly” after her version was just nuts.

I was heavily into college rock by 1985. Saying that, the mix will drive you insane. Who didn’t want to sing like Roberta.

@much2say — thank you. If you don’t like that song, something stranger will come along tomorrow. That’s my motto.

All of the Grapefruit League games were canceled today because of the rain all over Florida. You did have it bad, weather-wise.

I love the alliteration! I wasn’t around on Monday, so this is Tuesday already. Is that a good thing or not? I don’t know. Yes, sad to hear of Roberta Flack’s passing. I read she had ALS or Motor Neuron Disease (MND) as we call it over here. Horrible way to die. Her version of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” is incredible. I’m looking forward to your new music lists. Those years resonate with me too. Good stuff (in advance)

I appreciate the faith you have in my peculiar music tastes (“good stuff [in advance]”). Glad to see you on Tuesday, because that means we both survived Monday.

That’s what it’s about. If you listen to “Empty Chairs” you can understand, that’s a great song.

At some point they said the Pope was a bit better. So sorry about Roberta Flack but she did have a long and blessed life.

Now they’re mentioning kidney issues. He’s also had a good long life. Both age 88, coincidentally. R&B has been taking a beating lately in the obits.
