The Music Shack is no more

We slept last night in our house-sit place and woke this morning to fog. We haven’t seen fog for quite some time. It’s very peaceful here. Just up the hill is the place where we lived for 20 years before moving to a retirement village. We went up there last night for drinks and nibbles. They are really nice people and we enjoyed meeting them again. The main changes are that they have pulled down the Music Shack where we had so many concerts - about 30 or in over ten years. That was a bit of a shock, and I am very sad about it really but of course, it isn’t our place any more so they can do what they like. They’ve also put a is kangaroo and rabbit-proof fence around the house. This means they are able to have more garden than was once the case. The photo is of the Music Shack with a concert in full swing.

Aw, sad that the “music shack” is gone. Sad, too, that they’re keeping the kangaroos out. Of course, I don’t have a garden, so I wouldn’t have the problem.

There is a nice pond where the Music Shack was but I still find it a bit hard.

@JudyEv — so we need an island in the pond for the stage!

@FourWalls The pond has a heavy plastic lining but when the roos try to drink from it, they tear the lining with their paws. I think it's karma.

sounds like a bittersweet visit—familiar but changed. The loss of the Music Shack is tough, especially with all the memories tied to it

I did find that a bit hard. We built it ourselves so a lot of sweat went into it.

Oh, I'm sure that pulled at your heart with the Music Shack being torn down. What a shame.

Although I've never actually been there, I remember your Music Shack and kangaroos well. I'm thinking it's the same feeling my husband has about the home he grew up in . . . his family hasn't owned that house for about 7 years now. The new owners that bought it are now selling it after remodeling . . . it was shocking to see the photos of the changes on a real estate site. Almost every bit of it was completely different - definitely not the house we fondly remember.

Some places do change out of all recognition. These people have added a deck and fence to keep out the roos but not a lot else has changed.

Yeah, I probably would feel the same if I sold this place and came back to see all kinds of changes.

By choice, I wouldn't have gone there but I didn't really have any option.

That is so sad. You must've felt so sad. Nothing lasts forever. That is such a bittersweet feeling to experience in life.

It wasn't even my property and I feel a bit sad over the news that they took down the Music Shack. I feel a bit sorry for the kangaroos, the new owners are not as welcoming as you and Vince where while living there.

@JudyEv Is it legal to shoot them or is there a 'hunting season' that it is allowed?

Thanks. She wants to have more garden so they've fenced off the house area. Apparently the young lads at the end of the road have been shooting the roos too so that there are fewer going through the place. We built the Shack ourselves and improved it bit by bit over the years so I do find it sad.

@Juliaacv You have caught me! I thought it was illegal to shoot roos but I think if you have a licence from the owner of the land, they can be culled. I'll need to research it a bit more.

When mom sold our childhood home, we never imagined the new owners would tear it down but that's exactly what they did about a year after buying it. They sold the land and moved back into town not far from the house mom bought there. It was a shock the next time we drove out by the old house and found it gone. Like we'd lost and old friend. I hope you guys enjoy this housesit and seeing the 'roos again like you used to.

Thanks. It's nice that they love being there although they're dividing their time between here and their other home. They'll retire here eventually.

I bet you and others miss the music shack. We have a love shack in the back yard which has been too cold for a few months to sit in, but we're hoping maybe we can this afternoon.

It's not always a good idea to go back to a place you loved. I made the mistake of visiting our old college rooms - which we loved for their wonky walls, sagging floor, and quirky little staircase. When we first lived there we couldn't even close the windows - but that's another story. Anyway I knocked on the door and asked if I could see the room - and it was just a modern shoe-box

I was aware of that but I didn't have much option. We are house-sitting next door; we've met the people when they came through the house and there was no way I could get out of it. They're lovely people but I'm finding it a bit tough. At least they're keeping an old bath in the paddock full of water for the 'roos.
