What does it take to proof-read a bookmark?

Some of you may remember my husband, Vince, lost two brothers recently. Bookmarks were given out at one service. One side has a Bible quote and the other side a photo of the brother and the dates of both his birth and death However, these dates are incorrect.
We visited one daughter yesterday and she had received new bookmarks, free of charge. They are not of much use to her now but even more upsetting is that they still don’t have the dates right. The only change is that one year has been changed from 1930 to 1939 but that still isn’t correct. What does it take to proof-read something as simple as this?

I think proofreading has become a lost art. Too many rely on spellcheck and don't consider anything else to go beyond proofreading to make sure it is correct.

@JudyEv We're working so hard to be sure there are no errors in the book Dale is compiling before it's printed.

@1creekgirl It can be really difficult to eliminate them all. Mistakes jump out at me although I make the occasional one in comments and responses. But then they jump at me if I visit the page again.

That is aggravating and unconscionable really. I hope she was able to either dispute the payment or get a refund on these.

I'm sorry that happened... twice. I would think it wouldn't be difficult to check a small amount of information but maybe for the bookmark maker it isn't as easy as we know it should be.

@JudyEv Yes, I agree with you. But with such a small amount of information given, surely it isn't too much to expect it all to be correct?

@JudyEv I'd be surprised if he got recommendations from her, too.

That's terrible. It seems like there are fewer and fewer people that can do a good job.

Intelligence? Good eyesight? Competence? Caring whether it's correct?
I'm often correcting already printed books as I read them. One egregious error I recently came across was changing a character's name from Alfie to Artie. Stopped me in my tracks: Who's Artie?

I am not sure about proof reading as I do it right the first time.

I hope the photos are correct at least.

@JudyEv That's a really bad mistake to make. You can't just be near a date.

That's bad. People don't proof read anything anymore.

Oh no!
For real! Read what you wrote, especially on items like that.

May I say that it shows they are not taking the thing seriously. It obviously was a careless mistake.
