Ronin the Mighty Rat

Even though there are people who don't care for rats this one named Ronin has proved he is a rat to like. He is part of a landmine-sniffing rat pack. Ronin is an African giant pouch rat and I think he is rather handsome. Ronin has set a new world record for the most landmines detected by a rat. Between August 2021 and February 2025 Ronin uncovered 105 landmines and 15 other pieces of unexploded ordinance according to the Guinness World Records. This is important because Ronin who was born in Tanzania was deployed to Preah Vilhear province in Cambodia which has one of the highest landmine densities in the world. It means this rat has saved a lot of lives.

That’s so cool. I love the difference they make when they are something people think of as pests.

I cannot say that I see him as handsome, but a very intelligent rat, that is for sure. He is saving many lives in his line of work. It is amazing what he has been trained to do.

@Juliaacv I think that if he was not so intelligent he might not have been trainable

@RasmaSandra Yes, he is obviously very intelligent. It makes you think doesn't it? I mean they have such small heads, and that is where their brains are, but his works so well as tiny as it is.

I don't want wild rats anywhere close to me but tame ones can be okay... I'm glad they've trained rats to help find unexploded ordnance and save lives.

Saw him on the news, but I can't remember if it was NBC on YouTube or here at home. Maybe both!

Now that's the first I've heard of rats being used like that but I have heard that rats are really very intellegent although most are also ruthless

Wow. I'm weird, but though we had rats in our attic that came out to steal the bread we put out for the birds and they were an nuisance, I thought their faces were kind of cute. I also was acquainted with a few pet rats.

Wow! That's really something. My home is always full of mice in the winter; so I have an aversion to rodents; but Ronin will have to be an exception.
