No, Pony, not the Gram Parsons song! Tomorrow the top ten starts for songs from the year I was born. Today it closes out with another instrumental. Those were good times for instrumentals, weren’t they! And yes, we had this 45 when I was little, or I’d probably never have heard it. Wheels - The String-a-Longs The story of a band you’ve never heard of and a song that sold sixteen million copies that you’ve never heard. The String-a-Longs were produced by Buddy Holly’s producer, Norman Petty, who shared co-writing credit on this song with band members Richard Stephens and Jimmy Torres. It was released as a single, and it sold seven million copies. Covers of the song, ranging from Billy Vaughn to the Ventures, sold another nine million copies. The band should have been rolling in dough. Nope. The record label folded when the band went to collect their royalties. Guitarists Stephens and Torres should have split about $700,000 for the success of the song. Instead, they got nothing. Oh, back to the Gram Parsons joke for a moment: another song The String-a-Longs did was called “Brass Buttons.” The Horse will find that humorous. So let the “never heard of it” begin. Another sad story from the sometimes very underhanded, deceitful way the business was run then. Wheels Written by Richard Stephens, Jimmy Torres, and Norman Petty Recorded by The String-a-Longs Released as a single, 1960 Subtle Latin beat, which was quite popular then:

That's awful that the two got nothing from the royalties.

Nothing from the sales either. They were taken to the cleaners. And it sadly happened quite a lot back then.

@JudyEv — indeed it did. Hank Locklin told me that he never saw a penny from his first #1 song (“Let Me Be the One”) because the record label never paid him. It also happened a lot on King Records. Most of those people were just starting out and figured having a record recorded and released was a big deal and the money was secondary. Even today, most artists (I’m not talking about the megastars like U2 or Taylor Swift, but the 99.999% of musicians who aren’t them…you know, the ones I listen to! ) make infinitely more money from touring than they do from record sales.

Wheels was played in the Lawrence Welks Show by Neil Levang. He was the father of Coral Levang, one of the friends I met here years ago.

It is a shame that the band The String A Longs did not get paid the money they earned from this song.

Unfortunately, that happened a lot back then. Hank Locklin told me that he never got a penny for his records on the Four Star label, and he had a #1 hit on that label!

@FourWalls It is a shame that the music industry in another era was so crooked.

Since I grew up with this song, nothing else came to mind…except maybe someone mistaking it for the Flying Burrito Brothers song.
