A fence from years ago

In the foreground of the photo, you can see a fence such as the old settlers would have made. It’s on the old farm where I grew up. My cousin owns it now. She and her husband are into all things old and natural and have a very quirky and interesting garden. Settlers used whatever was at hand when they were starting out. In South Australia, there are a lot of stone fences as stone was plentiful there. In my area, wood and timber were relatively easy to get so sheep-yards were fenced in this way.

You can also see this kind of fence here. People used what they could easily find around.

Yes, that's true. Once the rabbits arrived, farmers used rabbit-netting as much as they could.

I love stone houses and fences. We have a stone chimney and stone front around the front door. In the living room is an enormous stone fireplace...at least 15 feet across.

We have many fences like that throughout the “country” areas of the country. Very old, but still standing, which tells you something!

I've seen some in some of oldest settled areas too. They built things to last back then.

You can still get fencing like that, we have some along one side of our garden. Is a stone fence just another word for a wall? Or is it something different?

Do farmers fence their areas in India? What do they use?

They were used a lot here too. They were very innovative when it came to fencing.

The wooden fence has a strong vintage vibe ! Your cousin and her husband are nostalgic people.

Yes, they have tried to keep many of the old artefacts and have recycled a lot of other items.

The sheep didn't knock against it? This reminds me of James Herriot, the English Vet.

I guess they had bigger posts in the ground at regular intervals. I loved the Herriot series.

Things were so much different back then. Fences were made to last as was everything else.

I remember as a youngster seeing this type of fence regularly. Can't say I've seen one in a long time

There are a lot of stone walls in England too, isn't there? And hedges. I used to get cross driving in Ireland as you couldn't see into the paddocks. Here, most fences are netting so you get a better view of what's beyond.
