Would you discuss farting with a student?

We all have our own notions of what is proper behavior in our professional capacity. I have a 13-year-old bass student who is a goof. She likes to show me silly stuff on her cell phone, and I have to "redirect" her back to bass. We only have half an hour together. This past Friday, we were working out bass lines to Weezer, Nirvana, and other bands I don't regularly listen to. I don't know how the conversation got there, but she started telling me that she had had a "farting contest" with one of her female musician friends recently. I laughed, but tried to redirect her to the bass line we were working on. She continued, and I relented, telling her about the farting contest my horse/music friend's 11-year-old daughter had had with a friend of hers upstairs while my friend and I were practicing/jamming. She laughed, and I was able to refocus her on bass playing. If you have worked with kids, what are some of the most ridiculous things you have discussed with them? Sigh. The things I have to do to be a "fun" teacher. By the way, I have never farted.

We all know horses don't fart. I've laughed a time or two when I was teaching an older adult about something on their phone and they passed gas. I was embarrassed but it was LOUD! and I couldn't help laughing.

Maybe she was trying to find something to say. I just read a post with farting in it.

@thehorse There are those who just talk about farting and those who are the real deal and just get on with it and do it. I just get on with it, as often as is decent. Farting contests of course always carry the risk of follow through.

Lighting farts on fire is fun as well. But that requires a certain level of drunkenness. And many people donot know that methane gas itself is odorless to humans.

I haven't seen that photo of your horse before. My friend just lost her horse which didn't quite get to 32 years old.
