A discussion for the ‘boys’

Ptrikha_2 (@ptrikha_2) asked for a discussion about Australian cars. In Australia, because of our vast distances and active lifestyles, utilities (pickups) and SUVs are popular choices. Our most popular car brand is the Toyota and has been for 22 consecutive years, with the most popular models being the RAV4, HiLux and Corolla. The HiLux consistently tops the sales charts, due to its reliability and versatility. The Ford Ranger is a close second. The SUVs such as the Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5 are also popular while the small car/city driving market is dominated by models such as the Hyundai i30. Kia models such as the Sportage SUV and Cerato sedan are also selling like the proverbial hot cakes. Mitsubishi comes in as 5th most popular brand with their Outlander SUV and the Triton ute. And just yesterday I came across references to Corolla cars being common in Afghanistan. I wonder if there will be a third mention before too long. The photo is of Vince's 1937 Austin. He's not here to ask but I think that's right.

Not a car person, but I can understand SUVs being popular once you are out the city, unlike here there are Range Rovers a plenty in urban areas

@Ronrybs There was press reports once of high-flying managers of charities such as Save The Children, World Vision, etc, in Asian countries having big, powerful vehicles but never leaving the city areas.

@JudyEv I am sure very few of these wagons are "working" vehicles!

Japanese cars are good and reliable car. My husband had a Datsun ZX 208 that he drove during 35 years.

That's a very classy-looking car the ZX. No wonder your husband loved it.

@JudyEv - He had to sell it after his back gave him problems. That sport car was too low to get in and out comfortably for him.

@LadyDuck We are going to find this with our Jaguar too. Already it's a bit difficult to get in and out of.

The 1937 Austin is so so "Vintage" and "Classical" ! My Toy car during my childhood was in this shape. Thanks for starting this discussion on my suggestion ! So Toyota is at the top. Hyundai and Kia too look to be doing well. I have seen a few Hilux here but the more selling Toyota here are Fortuner, Etios and Innova. Kia Seltos sells fine here although we now also have SUVs from Honda (Honda Elevate) and Maruti(Brezza, S Cross Strong Hybrid etc.). Yet I am a bit surprised as I expected Audi to be among the top selling cars (Ravi Shastri won it as Player of Tournament in 1985 in Mini world cup, Australia). I have a Renault Car. Not very common, but not very uncommon in India as well. They have put in good efforts towards maintaining good mileage. Plus Honda and MG (Morris Garages) doesn't seem to have made a cut in Australia. Interesting & informative post !

My BIL bought an MG not long before he passed away and his daughter has one too. You see quite a lot of them here.

Doesn't Australia have it's own car manufacturers?

@rebelann It isn't. We should be making as much of our own stuff as possible - as should every country in my opinion. That way, you don't become so dependent on others.

Holden went out of business a few years ago so all our vehicles are imported now.

I know I see a LOT of Ford pickups on American roads. (Fords aren't my top choice but I don't haul stuff very often and can usually make-do with my car. I actually liked my Dodge Daytona hatchback best when I was moving. I could pack that full and still get good mileage.)

I had a little hatchback but it was amazing what you could fit in it. It was a great little car. I only sold it when we moved to Perth.

@DaddyEvil That sounds a nice car. There are lots of Mustangs around here now. Well, at least more than there used to be. I think some are what they call 'kit' cars.

Toyotas are an excellent car. I've never heard of the HiLux. I just junked my 1994 Toyota Corolla. We have a 2015 Scion xB (made by Toyota) which I am selling and a 2018 Subaru Impreza.

We had a Subaru for a while and it was a great little car. It wasn't all that big but we could fit both little boys in car seats in the back as well as our biggish brass instruments in the rear compartment. It was a hatchback.

Sometimes the actual models are given different names I think.

Toyotas are very popular here as well. We don’t have a HiLux model available (the trucks are Tundra and Tacoma for Toyota in the US). That’s a cool old car in the picture!!

We had a great run from our Toyota Prado and now our BIL has it. He is pleased with it too. Toyotas are very reliable and it's easy to get parts.

It varies a lot here by where people live and what their driving habits are. In my area we see a lot of trucks followed by SUVs next

Obviously people in the country like their bigger vehicles but some of those in the city never go off-road. It's more a status thing for some.
