We had fun today. . .

Every year one of our co workers tries to start flower seeds with our kids to grow "flowers" for Mother's Day. She never really succeeds, inside a dark old school building is a hostile environment. This year she had some health problems, plus we all feel like Spring just went on fast forward. It was never mentioned. I bought starter plants from Walmart--impatiens, and they have blooms.Soil is pretty cheap, and I did some decluttering. . . I brought cute coffee cups to use as pots. I need to get pictures. The kids got to choose a mug, put some stones in the bottom, choose a plant and add more soil and plant and water their plant. They will be settled nicely by Friday when we send them home. Tomorrow we will make cards to go with them. They will say "Moms are like buttons, they hold everything together." Lots of fun. Other people buy toys for the kids or junk food. I like to buy the experiences. I did not have to, but I chose to. There were plenty of impatiens left for my bucket that was empty. Oh and the flowers said "thanks" for rescuing them from Walmart.

Walmart associates often forget to water the plants in the Garden Center. I'm glad you rescued some of them for the kids and for yourself. And the cups to plant them in sound cute.

In order to attract buyers the plants often come in too huge, too blooming, and too rootbound. Younger plants would do better. These had roots coming out of the tops of the pots.

@GardenGerty Well, yeah... Walmart is in the business of selling plants. They don't WANT to throw them all into the compactor at the end of spring.

That's such a great idea. The kids (and Moms) will love that. Good for you.

Shhh! Do not tell them that they are practicing some of their skills for the educational goals, and also meeting the school theme of "Be Kind".

@GardenGerty Haha. No, stick to the 'happy' side. That's a good school theme to have. Society as a whole would do well to be more kind.

I am sure that the students will enjoy working on their Mother's Day project with you. As you said it doesn't take alot, but will have a great impact this coming Sunday and instill confidence in those that plant them and care for them.

That's better than trying to start the flowers. I am sure the kids loved it.

Some kids maybe could handle the process of starting the flowers from seed, but that takes a lot of planning. This was immediate gratification.

It was a good excuse to buy some flowers, because of course I bought more than enough and got to take some home.
