Hey, wasn’t this on my 100 favorite country songs list last year? Why, yes! Thanks for noticing! That means “Linda? NO!” as well. While I started listening to rock and roll in 1975, there was still plenty of country music around. In fact, there’s four more country songs on the list this month. Happy 50th birthday to this! Blanket on the Ground - Billie Jo Spears Here we have a case of taking the good with the bad. This was written by Roger Bowling. As I mentioned, this song is on my 100 favorites list. He also wrote a song that’s on my “songs that make me cringe” list, “Coward of the County” by Kenny Rogers. It’s like the band Train: I love “Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me),” and I can’t stand “Hey Soul Sister.” So not everything someone does is marvelous. This is a nice love song about keeping the “spice” in the marriage. Blanket on the Ground Written by Roger Bowling Recorded by Billie Jo Spears From Blanket on the Ground, 1975 To that spot down by the river:

Thanks for the warning. Besides travel, what else do you like to do?

Read history. That’s why I travel to all these places. I first read about the Coal Creek War before going to the museum. Oh, and listen to country music, to your dismay.

@LindaOHio — I do listen to other things. I drove over to see my niece last month, listening to Bach!

This was her biggest hit. She had another song in the late 60s.

Billie Jo Spears was one of the few country singers who “made it” over here. She wasn’t as popular as Dolly Parton or Tammy Whynette, but she definitely left her mark. (Not on the ground I might add! ) Talking of Tammy, who had a #1 over here in ‘75 with “Stand By Your Man”, also had another lesser hit with “D-I-V-O-R-C-E. Here is Scottish comedian Billy Connelly’s parody version of that song which topped our charts in 1975.

I’m surprised that she was popular outside of the US, given that she wasn’t that big here. Speaking of female singers, was Loretta Lynn popular in England, or is her Kentucky accent just too much to try to understand? Poor doggie in the Connelly song…

I don’t remember anyone covering it…which doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen.

I totally agree about Coward of the County. Very definitely cringe-worthy.
