What Was Your First Job?

May 20, 2025 11:00pm CST
I assisted in the office of the local book shop when I was a junior & senior. It's located in Sebastopol, CA. I just checked & there's now 11 locations in three counties. When I worked at the main one I believe there were two or three others. I answered phones, filed, did data entry, ran errands. My dad was the office manager/accountant & that's how I got my first job.

My first was a helper in a construction site when I was a kid. My brother-in-law who is the contractor and fireman hired me.

That's great! My first job was as the receptionist in a hotel ! It came with lots of ups and downs but, most importantly it was worth my time.

@sambriel How did you get into that? Do you still work in the hotel industry?

My first job was as a library clerk, back when the library was shifting from manual card catalogs to an Online Public Access System. My main task was to encode the books into the system. It was tedious and a lot of work, but I truly enjoyed those few years working in the library.

@pitsipeahle I spent a fair bit of time in the library when I was in school. It probably could be tedious, but it sounds like it was fun as well. How did you get into that job?

I washed dishes and pots in a hotel in the town I was born in when I was 13 years old. I also picked potatoes, topped carrots, and did other jobs on the farm from the age of about 8. You were lucky your dad did the job he did. My dad worked on the farm I worked on and my grandmother worked in the hotel that I washed pots in

@ineeddentures I was fortunate. I've never been the manual labor type. Having been somewhat disabled for many years, I wouldn't be able to do that type of work even if I wanted to. I'm thankful & appreciative of those who do those kinds of jobs. Did you continue with either as you got older or did you find something that suited you better?

My first job was in a Sub Shop, I believe it was called Your Sub or something along that nature. I was a cashier and food prep all in one. However, I didn't work there very long, the boss was extremely hard to work for.

That's an interesting job. I was a branch secretary of an appliance store in our place. I learned a lot of things from that work including how to entertain potential buyers. I realized that I have a skill in sales. I stayed there for three years.

@jstory07 It was all right. It wasn't my choice, though. I don't know what I would have done. I wasn't really thinking about it then.

I was a janitor for the schools. I worked two hours after I got done with classes every day and 40 hours a week during the summers. There is an organization called OACAC here that hires underprivileged kids. I started when I was 13 years old and worked for them until I graduated from high school.
