Everyone should see this – and then act on it!

Last week I went with a friend to the cinema to see David Attenborough’s latest film, ‘Ocean’. I came away with the feeling that this is something everyone should see. It’s too easy to adopt the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ attitude to the sea, but this film shows what is really happening out there and how we are all responsible for allowing it. It also was the first I knew about an upcoming gathering of world leaders next month at the UN Ocean Conference. This is a chance for those with real influence to make a big difference to how we care for life in our seas and consequently our world – because managing the oceans properly has the potential to provide us as well as other creatures with a comfortable place to live (climate change-mitigating benefits) for those of us on land) and reliable food supplies. If you haven’t seen it already I recommend you do. And then take action. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIZAdCtKT_g All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2025.

We already know the opinion of one of the world leaders "if the oceans level increases, we will have more beaches"... I am sure you can guess who this one is. What to say!?

Really? Was it Donald Thumb? I have been one of the few advocating one or no children for at least three to four generations in India, as it will bring down a lot of problems this country is facing. But I am laughed at. Kinda, you don't know what it is to have kids so you talk like that they say. Anna, as humans we generate a lot of waste. All that needs to be disposed. We also have food requirements, and we like variety, for which we use a lot of resources again. Do dogs or other animals do that? And we have wars. I don't know a single planet destructive war that dogs or cats or even tigers and snakes managed to wage. We over fish so that companies can make profits or get larger market share. We deny the fishes in the sea their food bringing down their population. We also opt for undersea nuclear experiments as if it does not contribute to fish mutation, water contamination, and earthquakes and tsunamis and GLOBAL WARMING. Our limited thinking ability is shocking.

@vandana7 You guessed it right Vanny. You know he think that "climate change" is fake. China understood the need to limit the number of children. Humans are too many, soon there will be no natural resources to satisfy humans needs, but still people do not want to hear talking about limiting children number. We are doing everything wrong right now and then powerful people decide that the only way to get rid of humans is to start destructive wars. Sad, very sad world.

@LadyDuck I already mentioned sometime ago. In India, there are new and silly rules about number of people in the region can elect a member of parliament. Effectively, the people in the north have more kids, so they get more member of parliaments, whereas, people in south are more sophisticated, and settle for fewer kids, and being richer, and higher contributors to taxes. But this means, we in south will soon have no say despite paying higher taxes. So our leaders are urging people to have more kids. Doesn't make sense but when silly proposals come up, such things will come up.

I hope world leaders act on this. Of course, we all need to do our bit as best we can. I haven't seen the film yet but intend to at some stage.

I read somewhere that oceans are increasing in size at a faster rate, so soon we will lose substantial areas in coastal parts of our country, effectively increasing disputes...

We should do our bit by writing to our leaders and urging them to 'do the right thing'.

@fleura Sadly I believe that politicians who attend these conferences do so because they are vote winners and they need to be seen to be there. Anything that can be turned into a commodity and be monetised is fair game, even the ocean. Oh cynical me.

Exactly, so if we, the electorate, are seen to care, they will be forced to go.

Plastic pollution is what concerns me. In addition to being eaten by marine life, they are now finding traces in our brains, etc. This has to stop.
