How do you get a wife’s attention?

A couple in their 70s sat at the table next to ours in a pavement café in Athens last week. It was a pedestrianised part of the city and we sat under welcome awnings that shielded us from the sun. The lady (who looked like Angela Lansbury) was engrossed in her iPad, giving her husband a running commentary on whatever she was looking at and he was bored rigid. He tried in vain several times to get his wife’s attention but she was lost in her own little world. A tour group passed along the street quite close to us. They were all wearing very large name tags, and as they passed the bored husband called out in a baritone drawl, “Hi Kim, hi Laura”. Kim and Laura (bouncy English girls) giggled and shouted “Hi there!” back. Immediately the wife lifted her nose out of her iPad, slapped it shut and sharply snapped “How do you know those ladies?” Now he had her attention as she scanned the line of lovely ladies being led along following in the footsteps of Saint Paul. I do like observing these little happenings.
