Homeless?

Social Security does not give people enough money for people to qualify for rent an apartment or other type of home. I called Social Security and told the lady that answered the phone that and she said she knew and she wished there was something she could do about it. Now the rules say that if a person paying rent for a room and needs other assistance such as medical or food and anyone renting another room in the same home you are required to give their financial information. Their income is considered as part of yours. We are all to be on the same tax return!!!!!! No wonder people renting rooms require that the renter works a full time job!

I don't understand the rationale of why we are required to give the renter information. Lucky, we do not have such rules in Singapore.

The rationale is...the person who is renting needs to be able to afford it. lol

Problem #1 is that Social Security was NEVER intended to be a pension, NOR was it ever intended to be enough to retire on. Everyone gets a statement every year telling them exactly what they will get, so it should never come as a surprise if it falls short, and everyone should be making sure to have other funds to turn to when they retire and are no longer able to work. As for the rules regarding your post, the bottom line is that a renter who is qualified needs to be determined he or she can actually afford the rent. Why would anyone rent to someone who will likely default? lol

That sounds incredibly frustrating and unfair. It's hard enough to make ends meet on Social Security, and expecting renters to share financial info or be on the same tax return just adds more pressure. It really highlights how the system needs to be updated to reflect the realities people are facing today.

How can someone who is unrelated to you and who just happens to rent a room in the same house have their income counted as yours. I don't understand it

My family and I live in Section 8 housing. We feel very lucky to have the voucher. It goes by how much money we bring in. My daughter and grandson are on disability and I am on Social Security.

Social Security isn't 'giving' anyone anything because that is the money we worked for. And yeah, it is not enough, but then again, I didn't make that much in life..I always worked but didn't get paid enough..not nearly enough for the value I put out. Sometimes I would make enough but that was not from the company I was working for, that was my own earnings from tips..and sometimes I made more than college degree kids that couldn't find a job.

My social security wouldn't pay a month's rent, that's for certain. Thankfully, I've lived in the same house for 36 years and it's paid off.

They are so cruel to those who have no way of making it on their own I hate how things are with the people who can't support themselves & there's nothing any 1 can do about it other than help support them.
