Teachers don't get paid for summer break

Ugh I am so sick of this lazy GOP talking point and complaint about teachers. Not true! I work a 10 month contract each year--September to June. We do have the option to do "summer savings" which means that 10% of each check post-tax is kept behind and then we get 4 checks (July 1/15, August 1/15) when we get that money sent. Any money I receive during the summer from the district is what I've already earned. We don't get paid for summer breaks. Many teachers work as lifeguards, bartenders, waitresses, etc. over the summer. Yeah we aren't paid for that time off.

The school I went to paid their teachers over summer break, but they were a private school. They didn’t make as much as public school teachers made (it was a private school in a bad neighborhood; they couldn’t afford to pay more than they did), but the school paid over the summer too. They wanted the teachers to have the summer off completely if they wanted. But I’ve never heard of public school teachers getting paid over the summer. You’d think people wouldn’t lie about something so easily checked. Then again, in this day and age, it seems to happen often.

@AmbiePam teachers here are paid during summer with or without reporting to work. Only private colleges and universities who don't pay trackers during summer, if they are probationary teachers.

I guess they think that because they’re paid 52 weeks for six months of work everyone else is.

How rude of them. As long as you get something,

I'm not sure what happens here. I think their annual salary is spread over 12 months as they don't have to have a period with no pay coming in.

Aren't you glad that you can spend your summers at the pool sunning yourself and not being a lifeguard? Do you do "summer savings"?

So teachers will have to have side incomes for that 2 months. Summer saving, I am not too sure if it is really useful. I might just do a few side jobs if I am a teacher and experience some new jobs....

We had teachers explain that when I was in school fifty years ago. I know I used to see my math teacher working as a lifeguard at the pool during the summer break.

That's normal if you are not a regular faculty or in a probationary period, It's the same here in my country no load during summer classes only the regular full-time faculty members.

Teachers should be paid for the entire year since the job as a teacher is extremely hard.

Here teachers get 10 weeks holiday every year and weekends off also. I have no idea how they are paid but on light of recent events of unruly and abusive kids I wouldn't be a teacher here for all the tea in China Teachers deserve and earn every penny they get in my humble opinion.
