A day spent listening to music, and cheering on our niece

We spent most of yesterday at one of Perth’s most prestigious schools, listening to a number of musical items presented by brass bands, concert bands and individuals. It was the State Championships and we enjoyed listening to a good mix of pieces. A niece of ours, and sister to the niece whose house we’ve been looking after, performed in two solo competitions playing the flute, and managed to win them both. She played very well but I thought she might have been disadvantaged by being overpowered by the accompanist on the piano. Luckily for her, the piano was also a bit too loud for the other competitors too. Our niece plays in three bands and banding has just about become her whole life. She works very hard raising funds for the groups and is an excellent team-member. The photo was taken by Vince.

That got me thinking. Do pianos have a volume control? Will have to look that one up

Most have a sostenuto pedal which muffles the sound a little. They had the lid open first time around too which made it worse.

@JudyEv You learn something everyday. I had wondered about this before, but forget all about it when I am online and could look it up

Heh. When I accompany others, I try to be subdued. Glad she did well.

A piano can easily be over powering. The solo competitions were held in a chapel but the acoustics were terrible.

We enjoyed the day as we used to play in a brass band when we were younger.

That is the adjudicator. It was the first time I saw a 'bass flute'. She played in a trio and her friend played a bass flute. There is twice the tubing but some points out to the right and doubles back to make it more balanced.

Glad that your niece won the two solo competitions of flute ! It would be better if the piano accompaniment were not that loud ! -The sauce is better than the fish.

She played baritone in one of the bands and euphonium in another. They are both brass instruments but she's played flute for her solos.
