It said online that squirrels are deterred by marigolds. If for some reason the bitter apple spray doesn't work. Maybe I will put some marigolds in. Did you ever try that before? They say squirrels don't like the scent. I see more squirrels around here than birds.

I put wire mesh over the lettuce I planted in pots on our front porch two years ago. I got tired of feeding a fat little squirrel that kept raiding it. (He wasn't happy when he couldn't reach the lettuce he could see growing in "his" favorite pot. I stood at the window and watched him work and work trying to figure out how to get into it.)
I've never tried marigolds but mom planted them everywhere to keep deer out of our garden when I was growing up.

@snowy22315 True... and I can't blame them. I hate the smell of marigolds.

You are lucky that you see so many squirrels.
We live in a rural town with lots of country walks and footpaths and woods
.
And I have never seen one single squirrel here

Funny, I have a lot of huge oak trees, and they like those. This area is pretty heavily wooded as well, at least right around the house. Acres of woods behind me and trees all over this lot.

@Ineeddentures I wouldn't give them something like that..I am guessing if I did, it would be after the walnuts inside.

I like squirrels.
I gave one some chocolate cake a few years back in our old house.
It loved it, and what a mess it made haha
It was comical.
Chocolate might not be good for them but it didn't do it any harm

I have raised planters to keep the critters out of them.
Although, some of the climbers wouldn't be stopped, but we don't have them here.
I like some marigolds every year, they help keep down the mosquito population, and they are bright and pretty.

@snowy22315 But I believe that planting lavender will keep the pests away also. I have done that in the past with great success.

I haven't heard marigolds as a deterrent for squirrels. It's worth a try.

So far no problems but they don't even have blossoms yet.

Well they do sell squirrel proof feeders, they are expensive, but presumably they work. Marigolds would likely be much cheaper.

I love my squirrels so I don’t want to get rid of them. At least as long as they don’t try to get into the house.

I like them too, but they have have plenty of places to play here other than in my tomato plants.
