An unexpected poem

I’m lying on my bed about to pick up a book I’m reading currently when a line comes to me. I pick up my phone and write that line down so I can work on it later. Then more lines start coming to me so I keep on writing them down. Before I know it I’ve got a new poem. I will have to edit it a bit but at least a new poem exists.
I love it when a poem or lyrics come to me unexpectedly. No need for prompts or sitting there trying to figure out what to write about. No staring at an empty page. Words just flow out of me…

Yes. Sometimes it’s hard to keep up.

@Ineeddentures That’s probably true.

Especially as one gets older.
The mind is slower.
Or at least that's what I have found

Me too! I hate it when I have an idea but nothing to write it down. Sometimes repeating the lines helps. But they don’t always commit to memory.

@LindaOHio I’ve been using notes app on my iPhone when no pen and paper.

@lovebuglena You should keep a notebook and a pen or pencil with you at all times.

I’m gonna publish it on my blog. Don’t think I can share the link here.

@lovebuglena I've just been reading Willie Nelson's life story and he says his best stuff just flows out without too much effort.

@JudyEv That’s the best thing when the words just flow.

That’s not always the case. But I like it when stuff just flows out of me rather than sitting there trying to figure out what to write.

In this case, if you don’t have anything to write down what comes to you you’re screwed.

That's how most of my poems are written. It's usually strong emotion that gets me to pick up my iPad, open Pages, and tap out a poem. Usually the whole thing comes to me all at once.
The daily library of lines idea was cool in college, but I largely dropped it as I now have about a hundred "spontaneous" poem drafts awaiting revision or disposal. I don't need to squeeze words out of myself. I'm not a word juice press.

@lovebuglena It's having a word file for each month where you write out a number and each date in the month. Then each day you force yourself to come up with one poem line.
#1: 1 July 2025: Line
#2: 2 July 2025: Next Line
This is a "curbstomp exercise" if you suffer from creative anxiety and are looking to squeeze more poetry out of yourself to publish.

I don’t write as much as I used to but I’ve got a lot of poems under my belt.

I get as lot of inspiration for my poem through things I see or hear online and through my favorite music,

Sometimes I read someone else’s poem and that inspires me.
