It finally happened.

Well, for a while, now at least. George finally hit his rock bottom, again. He'd been so against me cleaning the site around his stoma, that it'd go days without treatment. Last night, he asked me for, and allowed me, to put on some cream and a drain sponage. And, well, he slept better then he had in a long time. He even said it was quicker and easier. And, I just finished changing it. Given how bad it'd gotten, I was happy to do it. As they say, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.

I think George's main issue, and one that I can entirely relate to, is that he's always been an independent person and that didn't change when the stroke happened. Glad you were able to make some progress despite previous challenges.

He always has been. He never liked asking me for anything.-- now he has to ask for almost, everything. It's a huge dynamic shift, and something that's a lot harder for him to process. Plus, when something is uncomfortable, you tend to want to leave it alone.

@porwest I'm the same way, so when people tell me I 'need help' I can't imagine what 'help' they think I need.

@kaylachan I can definitely relate being an EXTREMELY independent person myself.

Yeah. When we first got back from rehab, he was much better about it. I've struggled and fought with him over it for the better part of a year.

He had to deal with the consequences of his own stubbornness. I am glad it did not get a bad infection and give him a set back.

Me, too. I'd been intermentally been able to keep it clean, just not as often as I would've fliked.

My grandmother was super stubborn about using a walker--but Mom and I just couldn't have her hanging on our arms all the time.

Yeah. George chose to start using one a while back.

Don't know how long this will last, but George didn't physically fight me and actually asked for it. And, that's a win.

Glad he finally let you clean it As others have already said, he's lucky it didn't get infected

Agreed. I think it's only because I've forced myself on him and physically fought him at times to get it done. Plus he's had several rounds of antibotics.

Glad you were able to clean it. No doubt it is dangerous letting it fester like that.

It's very dangerous. So far it's mild redness that's painful to touch, but it could lead to infection quick. George's been on several rounds of antibotics, because he was so stubborn about getting it clean. but once he realized having it clean helped, he let me.

Hopefully this marks a turning point in him accepting more support going forward. You're doing an amazing job.
