On Friday morning, we attended a play called 21 Hearts, the story of an Australian nurse, Vivian Bullwinkel, who was the sole survivor of 22 nurses who were marched into the sea and machine-gunned from behind. She spent the rest of the war years as a prisoner-of-war in camps consisting of civilian women who had been trying to flee from Singapore.
The play was very well done with a minimum of props. A video played behind the actors and, together with the soundtrack, added a great deal to the effect. This theatre group has done a number of plays in a similar vein and they’re always very well done. The director was a pupil at the school where Vince was employed as bursar (business administrator). It’s always a bit of a buzz to see someone you know doing so well.
They pride themselves on being a West Australian (WA) theatre group, employing WA actors and telling stories about WA people. Their last endeavour was about the Lighthouse Girl which I’ve written about previously.
Photo is mine.

I think many of us are worried about that. Sometimes it seems we're very close to it.

What an atrocious crime. War is no excuse to be that heartless and brutal (although many people take it as such). I'm so glad they've told her story. I had never heard of the Bangka Island Massacre before.

@JudyEv — there are so many, it would take a hundred years to find them all from last year.

I am sure it was interesting to see the play. I used to like plays when I was younger, but the ones I have seen in recent years..I found very boring. Maybe if I could see a professional theater company again. I would probably like it.

Marched into the sea and machine gunned from behind
What a cowardly thing to do
Was that the Japanese?

Yes
The Japanese were a funny lot right enough
Not in an amusing way
No surprise that they did not hand out the Red Cross parcels though

They are keeping stories alive that need to be told and understood.

I've been to a few local theaters and they have been well worth the money spent to see. It's been a while since I've taken my mom to see one...perhaps once I retire...will have to take her again.

What a heartless way to take lives. I'm glad the play was done well and you enjoyed it. Great photo.
