Going into affect on July 1st is a new Bouse law affecting people who don't have a place to sleep. It will then be against this law to sleep on public property or roadways. The law is described as "sleeping in public" and will carry a $10 fine.

A new law going into effect is fine but the government should give them a place to sleep

In my country what you call homeless people are given places to sleep provided they follow certain rules. Prople who sleep in public prperty or roadways don´t have the money to py that fine.

That's true but being kind or sympathetic seems to be beyond anyone in government nowadays.

@celticeagle A sad situation indeed But India has something. I picked this up from the Internet Yes, the Indian government provides shelters for pavement dwellers, primarily through the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM), which includes components for night shelters and other support. Additionally, schemes like Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) aim to make the country free of slums, including pavement dwellings, by providing housing and infrastructure. But stranely these pavement dwellers prefer the pavements

Yes, that is the problem. And government no longer cares about poor people. It's all about making money and giving tax breaks to the already rich.

If they follow rules then they will not have to pay fine

Seriously, they are going to attempt to fine the homeless population? Don't they realize if they had the funds to pay the fines they might also not be sleeping in public. For the fines that they do collect, I hope that they match them and put it towards an obviously, badly needed shelter.

@Juliaacv ........yes, I have heard stories about some getting help, getting on their feet only to go back homeless because the help they needed didn't continue long enough.

@celticeagle There has to be the right support, and since everyone's story differs, that takes alot of coordination.

@celticeagle A majority of the homeless, in our area anyways, need some serious one-on-one to help identify their weaknesses and strengths. After that they can find suitable housing for them, as we have them here, independent living with a communal type of atmosphere and 24/7 access to medical care within their apartment complex, group therapy sessions, cooking and budgeting assistance and so on. They often are kept very busy so that they do not slip back to their old ways.

Homeless shelters and soup kitchens here are mostly run by churches and make people listen to sermons before they're allowed to eat or sleep. I'd rather sleep on a bench in the park instead of listening to sermons, too!

And now the shelters and soup kitchens are being closed down in some areas. They don't care about the homeless. It was never helped and has just become a sore on the face of communities who don't care about their citizens.

@celticeagle Really? Why would he eliminate such programs? Unless he has a new program to implement for them

Those sleeping on pavements and public places are too poor to have money to pay the fine. So, not sure id this law will really work. Government should work on providing them shelters.

I love when they think a threat of fines will solve the problem.

Those people don't have $10! They need to have more facilities for the homeless.
