We are getting yet another bin !

United Kingdom

So we have heard this week that from sometime next year we are to get another bin ….we currently have 3. This new bin is going to be just for food waste. I think an idea might be to be able to buy smaller quantities of things. For example I am on my own during the week as The Mister works away so if I need mushrooms I can’t now buy any loose mushrooms, I have to buy a pack. I can’t eat a pack, I end up throwing some away. I also have a plastic container and cling wrap to dispose of ! It does not make sense. A waste of food, spending money I don’t need to spend and packaging I didn’t want or need , to get rid of. Any thoughts …

Mushrooms can be dried and stored practically forever as long as they don't get moist again until used. A lot of foods are like that. During the pandemic, the government here bought out everything that local farmers were growing and gave it to anyone who wanted to go collect it. There was a distribution center about 15 miles from us. I went once a week and picked up two boxes full of fresh produce and gave one box to our elderly neighbors... One box we either used up or I dehydrated the foods we couldn't use as quickly. I still have some of that dried veggies stored in air-tight containers in the kitchen. We use them in soups, stews and when I make scrambled eggs with "stuff" in them. You could also make a compost heap in one corner of your yard. Any food waste, mainly veggie waste, could go into the compost heap and it would gradually turn into soil that could be used in your garden, flowerbeds or flower pots. (Meat and bone waste aren't good in composting unless you really know what you're doing.)

@Traceyjayne Unfortunately, a city council can make any changes they want you have to abide by them or move.

@DaddyEvil oh yes, i understand that....however i would like them to think about where the bins are to be kept and folk like my Mom at 87 can not easily move these things.

You need to think long and hard about the food you buy. Is it something you eat often? You can also make food stretch if you use it in creative ways.

I like to make things from scratch , although I do sometimes batch cook and freeze portions. There are times I can’t do that, but why must I change what I cook and eat because of others … As far as mushrooms are concerned why can’t we buy them loose. No waste and no packaging !

@traceyjayne That really annoys me, supermarkets insisting that we buy more that we need. Mind you I’d understand them being ticked off if you bought nothing but one mushroom.

they would still get money even from a mushroom ! People are turned off from buying packs because it costs more and you throw some away. if smaller quanities or loose were available people would buy a range , therefore more in the long run.

We had three bins where we were house-sitting but only two at this place. I'm with you. Where are people supposed to store these bins?

Many a times, I feel that those packaging are not needed. See how much goes back to environment as packaging material. You are very right in saying that we should be able to buy how much we need.
