Ooh, yuck. I’m (ick) making plans for a trip?! I like spontaneity, but unfortunately the boat rides only run on weekends, even in summer. Darn. Oh, well. Here’s a sunny song for a sunny time (which we probably won’t have with the golf tournament this weekend ). Hurry Sundown - Outlaws The Outlaws down in Tampa town It’s a mighty fine place to be They got green grass, they got high tides And it sure looks good to me (Molly Hatchet, “Gator Country”) The Outlaws are one of those southern rock bands that you’re pretty sure you’ve never heard of. You might sing along with “There Goes Another Love Song” if it comes on classic rock radio. “Oh, that’s the Outlaws?” Yep. There was a lot more to southern rock in the 70s than “Free Bird.” I got to hear a lot of it that didn’t make national playlists because I lived in Florida as a teenager. In fact, I lived near Tampa when these guys got started nationally (along with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer team [I still remember their song: “Oh, the Rowdies went here, the Rowdies went there, they kicked the ball around!” ]). While “There Goes Another Love Song” was their, ahem, “hit” (although their cover of “(Ghost) Riders in the Sky” peaked slightly higher on the charts, but both just barely inside the top 40), they had other memorable tunes. While it never charted, “Green Grass and High Tides” is their “signature” song. This is a great tune, one of those “ghost stories” about gypsies imploring an outlaw’s ghost to take revenge on someone who’d killed one of their own. A good rocker that reminds me of good times in Florida. Hurry Sundown Written by Hughie Thomasson Recorded by the Outlaws From Hurry Sundown, 1977 Gypsies danced around the campfire:

I saw them play at Iowa Jam in 1982 or 1983. A lot of my memories from the early 1980's are a little foggy. I think the Ozark Mountain Daredevils and .38 Special played that year too. I went and camped out several years at the festivals. I had a t-shirt at one time but it got lost somewhere over the past 40 years. Great band. Thanks for the partial memory, lol.

I do remember the band, There Goes Another Love Song and Ghost Riders in the Sky, but don't remember Hurry Sundown. It's too bad this band didn't get more attention. They were not too bad and better than some others

That’s understandable, they were a 70s band primarily played on FM rock in the southeast.

@FourWalls I thought so since New Orleans is not exactly in southeast area.

Great pick! I think when you talk Southern Rock bands some of their music ranks up there with the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band, ZZ Top, 38 Special and Little Feat. Their dual lead guitar interplays a characteristic of many Southern Rock Bands meshed together well with great vocal harmonies something prominent in Country Rock Bands like Poco and The Eagles. Every song on their Hurry Sundown LP which I bought at the time is a winner!

@dgobucks226 — I was born in Kentucky, so Florida was indeed a “change of scenery” when I was a teenager. That’s why I keep going back to Florida every winter. (Well, that and it’s warm in January. )

@FourWalls Tampa to Kentucky. That's a change of scenery. But I'm sure one of your road trips brought you back to the area from time to time.

I don’t know this one, but I do agree with the sentiment: Hurry Sundown, as in the Gordon Lightfoot song. I’m guessing that might be in your top ten.

Southern rock was big on guitars! Some of it was much better than others (like this one).
