The things we say about live creatures and comparisons...Idioms, similes, metaphors, or just plain silliness.

I was reading discussions and came across one posted by @JudyEv., about her brother-in-law's visit. He spent the night with them, and was the last to wake up the next morning. She referred to the old saying of ''He was the cow's tail'' which is an old saying meaning basically, he was the last one awake, the last one in line, etc. We all have old sayings we've heard our entire lives. This morning after I read that, I was thinking that many, many of them are comparing people to animals, bugs, or creatures of some sort. Just thinking about it when I was going about my work, I came up with quite a few. Ones that came to mind... Fat as a piggie Free as a bird Slow as a snail Big as an ox, or Strong as an ox Sly as a fox Quiet as a mouse Tired as a dog, Let sleeping dogs lie Happy as a clam Stinky as a goat Quite a few about cats-- look what the cat dragged in Curiosity killed the cat Cat got your tongue. He let the cat out of the bag They fight like cats and dogs He's the cat's pajamas Of course, I am sure there are a lot more of these...and many that are not about living creature comparisons, etc. Old sayings are fun, I enjoy them. Reminds me of special people that were in my life but are no longer with us. I know there are a lot more sayings like this that include living creatures of some sort. Do you have some that are your favorites, or that someone in your family uses, or did use in the past? pinterest picture

We have exactly the same saying in Italian, except "He's the cat's pajamas", that I never heard.

@LadyDuck The cat's pajamas originated in the flapper times of the 20's. It basically meant something was considered really neat or cool or however you want to think of it, the best, etc. I wouldn't know this but my grandmother told me--she was a teen in the flapper era.

The sayings of ''the cat's pajamas'' and ''the bees knees'' originated in the 1920's, before my time, and before yours, Anna.

I'll be there in two shakes of a lambs tail. Busier than a one armed wallpaper hanger. Happier than a fat guy at a buffet. Lies like a politician. Blindly follows like sheep.

One of my grandmothers loved to use the ''Busier than a one-armed paper hanger'' saying. I forgot about the lamb's tail, that's a good one, too, along with the others.

An unpleasant one, but the one that comes to mind is, “Full as a tick”. Gross!

I've heard this one, and I agree...one of the most disgusting creatures ever, a tick.

Thanks for the mention and the interesting post. I like to do cryptic crosswords, not that I'm very good at them. I've always remember one clue which was simply 'Cat killer'. The answer was 'curiosity'. So simple an answer in hindsight. lol

Like you said,so simple in hindsight! I haven’t done any cryptic crossword puzzles in ages. Maybe someday I will try them again.

Rats on roller skates and fleas on skis. There's another part of it I don't remember. We used to say that instead of swearing.

Sometimes, it seems nice and peaceful to get lost in some nostalgia now and then.
