Sunny Songs: Miss Sun

When the first words out of my mouth are, “Where’s the Elvis shrine,” you know I’m in a new-to-me Chuy’s. While I make up for not ingesting salsa yesterday I’ll brighten your day with another song that has “sun” in the title. Here’s one you probably do not remember, even if you know the artist. Miss Sun - Boz Scaggs And here we have two honkies singing R&B like nobody’s business. I mentioned that there was a joke in the Dallas paper one year that Boz Scaggs should have a Christmas present of a Hostess Snowball, “white on the outside, black on the inside, for obvious reasons.” The female vocalist on the song is Canadian singer Lisa Dal Bello. She first recorded this song with members of Scaggs’ backing band on the successful Silk Degrees album (it was written by keyboardist David Paich, who co-wrote most of Silk Degrees). That version was and wasn’t a success: the demo, of course, wasn’t released; however, it did get the band signed to a record deal. Today we know them as Toto. (“Hold the Line” on that! ) When Scaggs went to record it, Paich suggested Dal Bello recreate her Toto demo work for the Scaggs version. That gave Dal Bello her only “success” (she’s not credited on the 45) in America. As for Scaggs, it was his last top 20 hit. (He took five years off to deal with his divorce, and in that time music change a WHOLE lot.) You know I’m always happy to include a Boz Scaggs song for you!
