Still no gas bill to pay

For a while now since a new gas meter was installed at my mom’s house the bills that have come never showed any meter readings and it says that there is a credit on the account and no payments need to be made. This has been happening since probably November of last year, the bills coming every two months instead of monthly. Each time say account credit and do not pay message. I finally tried calling the gas company to find out what’s going on. I was on hold for a bit and no representative came on the line so I hung up. I’ll try calling again later. Is it possible that when you install a new gas meter that they have to wait until the meter reaches a certain amount of therms before they issue a normal bill with a meter reading and an amount to pay?

We got new gas meters and they worked and read the meters correctly immediately. You better watch out for a huge retroactive bill from them.

I hope this won’t happen.

I’m not an expert on this stuff, but maybe the new meter needs to hit a certain usage before it shows up properly in their system? Could be they’re waiting for a full cycle or something. Still, it’s kind of weird that it’s been this long with just account credits showing. Hopefully once you get through to someone, they can explain what’s actually going on.

No, that's not normal... Either something is blocking the signals from the new meter or there is some other problem. You need to call them back and wait until someone answers the phone and find out what's going on. (I once waited over three hours before a live person answered the phone here.) You can go to Fakebook to your electric company's Fb page and leave a bad review, telling them that the meter doesn't appear to work and you can't get anyone on the phone to find out what the problem is... Somebody usually monitors their page and they'll try to contact you. You can also try contacting the regulatory board for the New York State Service Commission here: Online: Visit the Department of Public Service (.gov) website and follow the instructions to file a complaint online. Telephone: Call the PSC's Helpline at 1-800-342-3377. They are available Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM - 4 PM. Fax: Fax your complaint to 518-472-8502. Mail: Send your complaint to the Office of Consumer Services, New York State Department of Public Service. Important: Before filing a complaint with the PSC, you should try to resolve the problem directly with your electric company. They are required by law to assist you with billing inquiries.

@lovebuglena That's fine. I hope they call you back quickly. Not knowing what's going on would be deeply unsettling to me. I'd have to find out some way to get peace of mind and quit worrying that they'd issue a bill in the thousands of dollars because I didn't find out what was happening sooner.

@DaddyEvil They called me back. I was told it can take some months for the meter to adjust and start getting proper readings. The rep sent an email to the billing department inquiring about why the bills come every two months and not monthly and why we are not getting billed yet. I have to wait until the next bill to see what’s gonna happen.

I called again. Finally the automated thing transferred me to a rep but all were busy. Was asked if I want to schedule for a rep to call me back instead of remaining on hold for who knows how long so I did that. Now waiting for a call from them.

She may well have paid a lot of money in advance and probably has built up a lot of credit with them If your mum has been sending in readings and there is nothing to pay then she must be in credit

The account has a credit of about $246. No bill needed to be paid since October or November of last year. She definitely used more than $246 worth of gas since then.

@lovebuglena Well how long has she had a credit of $246 for? Tomorrow Get her meter reading Phone it in. Speak to someone And ask what her new balance would be? Has she made any payments that you do not know about. Direct debits?

My question is does the credit amount change monthly or is it staying the same? It sounds like a malfunction --the meter is not online reporting the usage, defective or something of that nature.

The credit has been the same this whole time.
