I heard fireflies mentioned on a show I was watching. We don't have any in this area but it reminded me of a time when a neighbor boy brought some home in jar. They got out and we had fireflies flitting about for about a week.
I wondered about them, did some research, and here's what I found:
* They are a soft-bodied beetle called fireflies, lightning bugs, or glow worms.
* The light they produce, mostly during twilight, is to attract a mate.
* They are found in tropical and temperate climates in marshes, and wet wooded areas.
* All known fireflies glow as larvae, only some species produce light in their adult stages.
* The light organs locations differ among species.
* They are a beloved symbol in Japanese culture, appearing in literature, art, and folklore.
Interesting, huh?

Yup, interesting... like if they glow to attract a mate but only some produce the light in their adult stages, what good is it to larvae?

Maybe they have a long engagement that starts in larvae stage. Haha

In the city area, i did not see any fireflies.
And when I was serving the army, in a night exercise, I saw fireflies, not a lot just several tiny ones. Their light was actually white not yellow as per what story depicts them to be. And yes, the light flashes too not consistent like light bulb.

We have them here in Missouri. I caught them when I was a kid and kept them in jars to use as a nightlight in my bedroom. They weren't bright enough to read by so I started collecting flashlights, instead.
When Pretty was little, I helped her catch them and put them into jars so she would watch them flashing at night in her bedroom.
I rarely see any now but I stay out of the yard in the evening/overnight since that's when mosquitos are out and they try to carry me away as their private blood donor.

@Fleura
You just have to drive in the countryside away from city lights to see there are plenty of fireflies here.

I am always amazed when I see them. An insect that can produce light! Thanks for the lightning bug facts.

Interesting. As kids we got fireflies in jars and walked around with them like lanterns
