Breakfast

In ancient Egypt only the working class had breakfast. It was made up of a fresh cup of beer, an onion, and a hearty piece of bread. Drinking beer was supposed to give a person enough calories to make it through the day. In the Middle Ages skipped breakfast. It was thought of as being godly. Eating more than one meal was thought of as glutony which was a sin. And, it had to do with self control as well. The rich had a long and involved lunch that went on for hours. So not eating breakfast was not a problem at all, and they had no need for dinner. By the 1600s trad was taking off. People in Europe were experiencing many new items such as coffee, tea, and chocolate. The Catholic church let people drink liquids in the morning, stating this was not breaking the fast. It wasn't until the 18th and 18th centuries that breakfast really became a thing.

Do you mean 'fasting'? I think it's a good thing occasionally. We fast at the end of the month when there is little or no food and no money to buy any. It's a fun time but I have tried to feel the fasting is good for us.

In China, breakfast is a recent thing too. It used to be 2 meals a day. Once at 11am and the second meal will be at 5 or 6 pm. I am sure there will be snacks inbetween.

When I started working for the first time in NYC I never had time for breakfast, now I eat it sometimes but mostly have one large main meal of the day and then snack on stuff,

That is how I would like to eat. Sort of a brunch and then a light snack later.

You're absolutely right.. what we now think of as a "normal" morning meal has changed dramatically depending on cultural values, religion, and social class.

In my younger years I skipped breakfast most days. Somewhere along the way I started eating breakfast and although it usually isn't a lot I eat breakfast every morning and of course coffee. It's really interesting how eating breakfast has transcended through the centuries.

I have always loved breakfast. We didn't do it around here until this summer. Can really only afford one meal and some snacks. That's it.

I usually end up having breakfast around 2 am and my lunch around 8 or 9 am. Then I wait until 4 pm for my dinner. My schedule is all off. Very interesting post.
