Cyrk posters in the lounge

In the lounge of our AirBnB, there are several posters, all based on a circus theme. Five of them have the word ‘Cyrk’ in the artwork. ‘Cyrk’ is Polish for ‘circus’. I researched this and it seems they are contemporary Polish circus posters. Such posters were first seen in 1962, emerging from the Polish School of Posters, and intended to attract people to the upcoming circus. Wikipedia says: The posters ‘… are characterized by their display of aesthetic qualities such as painterly gestures, linear design, hand-lettering, metaphors, humor, and vibrant colors.’ They make an interesting display in the lounge.

More and more people are now opposed to exploit animals in a Circus. I have to agree, they are not kept in very good conditions.

The circuses that are found here don't have many animals anymore. They tend to focus on acrobatics. Any animals are usually domestic ones - dogs, horses, camels. I've even seen cows and alpacas used.

@JudyEv I am noticing the same here in Europe, almost no more animals. The famous "Cirque du Soleil" does not use animals in its performances. They focus on human acrobatic and artistic feats.

When was the last time you and Vince went to a circus? I took Pretty to one when she was 5 or 6 years old but that was the only one I took her to. We made a point of going to zoos around the country when we were doing a lot of traveling while she was pre-teen but haven't been to a zoo since she was in her early teens.

@JudyEv Did you remember to return the kids when you were done at the circus or did you make some extra pocket money before you left the circus grounds?

@DaddyEvil It was strange. We knew the parents quite well but they made up some excuse and met us at the circus grounds after the performance, without telling us that was what they were going to do. I guess they talked themselves into a bit of a panic maybe.

We 'borrowed' some kids to take to a circus probably 15 years ago. That would have been the last time.

The artwork is appeasing, even though circus exhibits have drawn to a close for the most part. I will say that 1962 was an exceptionally great year, or so someone born during that year would proclaim.

I can see that you'd think that but they're a bit bigger. A bit larger than A4 size I guess.

@JudyEv And it's too expensive. But yet art lovers do buy them especially the rich people.

The circus must pay the AirBnB a lot for those posters.

They are just for decorative purposes. I think they are probably prints that could be easily purchased in an art store perhaps.

They are simple & colourful. The exploitation of animals are frowned on these days. I remember being taken to a circus in Russia & felt very uncomfortable for the poor animals. Shortly after l went to a circus in the UK where trapeze artists, acrobats & other human entertainers performed & I enjoyed it more. How times have changed in our lifetime!

We don't see any exotic animal acts in our circuses nowadays. There might be some domestic animals but that's it.

That’s unusual …I wonder if the owners were part of a circus at one time ….
