Why Do We Lick the Foil Top of a Yogurt Container?

I was eating a yogurt this morning (as I’ve done hundreds of times before), and—as usual—I found myself licking the foil lid.
It hit me: this simple habit is actually pretty widespread, and maybe even a little complex once you think about it.
Why do we do it?
Here are a few reasons I’ve come up with:
?? Avoiding Waste:
For a lot of us, leaving even a tiny bit of yogurt stuck to the lid feels wasteful. Food is food, and some of us were raised in families where not wasting anything was important—sometimes because our parents or grandparents lived through hard times like the Great Depression.
?? Upbringing & Ritual:
Maybe you had a mom, dad, or grandparent tell you to lick the lid “so it doesn’t go to waste.” For some, it’s just a family habit. Others might not relate, but still have their own version of this ritual.
?? Practicality & Satisfaction:
Sometimes, it just seems practical—you paid for it, why not enjoy every last bit?
And let’s admit it: there’s something satisfying about not leaving anything behind.
?? Personality & Sensory Enjoyment:
I wonder if it says something about our personalities. Some folks are super thorough or detail-oriented and don’t like leaving anything behind.
Others just like the taste or texture of yogurt right off the lid.
?? Etiquette & Social Setting:
Of course, in public or around others, some people might skip licking the lid because it could be seen as rude—or maybe they use a spoon instead.
?? Health & Safety:
For what it’s worth, there’s no real health risk with modern yogurt lids, since they’re lined with food-safe plastic.
So, what do you think?
• Do you lick the yogurt lid?
• Did anyone ever explicitly tell you to?
• Is it about avoiding waste, habit, personality, or just enjoying the moment?
• Or do you find it a bit gross, and avoid it altogether?
Follow-up:
Be honest—have you ever licked it and then re-lidded the container to finish later?
Or have you ever stopped licking the lid after years of doing it? If so, what changed?
Would love to hear your stories, memories, or reasons for—or against—licking the lid.
Let’s see how many different perspectives we can get!

Well, I'm very much in favor of licking. I've actually done that hundreds of times. But never did that thought really touch me. And now, after reading your discussion, I have gone back to those times whenever I bought the yogurt can from the market.
It flashed before me that I have always licked the foil top and it was always a different level of pleasure doing that. Now you might have also realised that the amount of stuff that we lick, tastes slightly different than the contents of the entire can. Do you agree with this or not?

It's amazing the things we all do, but never like to admit to doing. And, you are right—there is a bit of a difference in taste.
Take water, for example: some people are fine with storing it in and drinking it from plastic containers. Others, like me, prefer glass all the way. It tastes so much better when stores and drunk from a glass.
I am also THAT picky about milk, and will only buy it in glass containers. My son is the same way. He was so excited when he moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana and learned of a Dairy bringing milk delivery back.

@Chellezhere Hahaha. I have never bothered about admitting stuff that I do, even if I do that personally and privately... Hahaha!
Yeah. It's always better to drink water, tea, coffee etc from a glass instead of using plastic glasses or plastic bottles. We never know how much microplastic we intake with those liquids. It's always better to be on the safer side.

@abhi_bangal True, but before all that was disclosed to the public, I still prefered using glass.

@Chellezhere That's a really sensible reason. This house is pretty pest-proof so I don't have to worry too much about such things.

@JudyEv So is mine, and the dumpster outside has doors and lids, but some people neglectto close them.

I primarily lick it in an effort to deter animals from going through the rubbish.

Normally I don't. The only brand I do is Oui yogurt.

I think that's common. I do it for that and to keep critters out of the garbage.

In addition to those reasons, I lick it so that there is no "food" in my wastebasket. It will attract mice and ants. YUCK!

@Chellezhere Before Terminix came, I had a mouse in the wastebasket next to me. I chased his little butt out of there. Gross.

So, what do you think?
• Do you lick the yogurt lid? Oh yes every time.
• Did anyone ever explicitly tell you to? No
• Is it about avoiding waste, habit, personality, or just enjoying the moment? Enjoying the moment, Yvonne says its sexy...
• Or do you find it a bit gross, and avoid it altogether? Not gross at all
Follow-up:
Be honest—have you ever licked it and then re-lidded the container to finish later? No
Or have you ever stopped licking the lid after years of doing it? If so, what changed? N/A

It may well be but I think everything is a potential euphemism

What I notice about myself is, if it's my (vanilla) yogurt, I will lick the lid. I do not lick the (plain-flavored) one for the dog.

Yes I lick the lid but have never given it a second thought. It just seemed like second nature to enjoy that little bit of yogurt that is stuck on the lid. Even my dog is happy to lick the lid if I'm willing to share.

It's funny. I won't let mine lick the yogurt off the foil. That's probably because if I turn my eyes for one moment, I'll awaken in the night and find the lid somewhere in my king-size bed.
