Were You Over There?

I walked into Casey's, a local convenience store and gas station down the street from my house, to grab some beer. Their prices are the same as Walmart, who typically has the best price, so in a pinch I go there to get it instead of trekking out to Walmart which is farther away and takes more time to get in and out. I headed for the beer section in the back of the store and then made my way up the middle aisle toward the cash register when a man appeared there at the end of the aisle. "Were you over there?" he asked me, and sort of gestured in the direction of the next aisle over. I thought it was an odd question, but responded anyway. "No, I went down the other aisle because there was a woman at the ATM and didn't want to have to maneuver around her," I told him. "No, In Iraq," he said. It then dawned on me I was wearing my Operation Iraqi Freedom shirt my sister got me many years ago that I still wear. "Oh. No. That was my sister. She was in the Air Force for 10 years and spent 6 months over there," I informed him. At least my confusion was abated.

10 years is a good stint to be in the service and serve in Iraq. Thank you for her service and yours.

@LindaOHio My dad did 23 years and I think he gets close to $2k a month. Not sure about that, but it sounds right. But it depends on when someone retired. My dad was at the time when the pension was around 52%. I would have retired around 36% and so would my sister have. My dad retired as an E8, or Senior Chief.

And only 10 away from a pension. I'd have stayed in, but she got out because of her kids and she knew she'd likely have to do another tour over there.

Some people ask some confusing questions at times. He knew what he was talking about I guess.

I have to say Thank You for your service (as @LooeyVille said) and also wow that your sister was in the Air Force for 10 years and spent 6 months in Iraq. When I say Thank You for your service to anyone who served in the military it comes from my heart. I do appreciate the freedom we have here thanks to everyone who serves.

I really do appreciate that. Serving was an honor and a privilege. I wouldn't trade my experience for the world.

I do that on occassion. I went to readers on the river and had my inn boonsboro bag when someone asked if I'd ever visited Maryland. I was like I live there....when she walked away I looked at my bag and was like oooooh, oops lol. I also do it with my fire and EMS shirts. It's bad when you forget what you're wearing as often as I do lol. Thank your sister for her service.
