Vacation?

Anyone planning a vacation? Here it is July and the summer is nearly over. I used to always like to take my vacations in September. Places weren't so expensive and it was getting cooler. My last big vacation was in the mid 90s when my ex and I went to Canada. Vancouver, British Columbia and up to Victoria. We stayed the night at Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands. Beautiful place. We slept in the back of the truck on the beach. I would be awakened off and on during the night by a different type of boat each time hooting it horn. It was such a peaceful sleep. Another night we slept in a park. It was pitch black out. Next morning we saw the signs that said no camping. Luckily we saw no authorities. I dream of going to Mackinac Island and staying at Grand Hotel. That is where "Somewhere in Time" was filmed. Such a lovely, romantic film. A real favorite of mine. I would love to see the island. But, I doubt I will ever have the funds to go. Do you have a vacation planned? Already been? What is your favorite memory of vacations from the past?

When I think of vacations, I remember the ones Pretty and I took when she was little after I started getting divorced from her mom. We traveled all over the country, staying in nice motels/hotels, usually close to amusement parks in different states. Sometimes, Pretty would be in her sleeping bag, buckled into the passenger side front seat with it reclined as I drove from one area to another... Then, once we reached our destination, I'd sleep for a few hours and we were off to see and do whatever offered in that area. It was a LOT of fun! We haven't had the money to take vacations for several years now, just going to stay with friends for a weekend or four days. A lot of those Pretty didn't want to go so I went by myself. *shrug*

That sounds like a wonderful bonding situation as well as seeing a lot of interesting places. There are so many places I would love to take the kids to see. But, like you I can't afford it. My daughter wants to see California and I'd love to see the Redwoods again. And, of course my dream to go to Mackinac Island. I'm sure they'd enjoy it too. I would want to start the trip by going to New Orleans for a few days. I missed out last time I was there. It was all closed up.

@celticeagle I think those vacations with Pretty were the best times of my life... I've enjoyed myself but she can hold up her end of a good conversation, and could as a little girl, too. With all the grants for different things to weatherize this house and Section 8, we're hanging onto enough money now that we'll be able to take some short trips this winter or next summer. And this October, I should be able to start drawing Social Security even if they won't let me claim disability. I wish there was a way for you all to save some money with the help of the government, too.

We always go away during July, but we pushed it back to August this year. It will feel different as the weather will be starting to cool off by then. Mackinac Island is a beautiful location, I hope that you make it there some day. My most favorite vacation was the year after my Dad passed away, and my husband sprung on me one afternoon that tomorrow he was taking me away and would only tell me to pack comfortable summer clothing. It was a blast and the excitement was the surprise as I had no idea where we going. We've been back to that place many times.

I hope I make to Mackinac Island too. It has been my dream for many years. Since about 1980 when that movie came out and I was introduced to it. How nice. My ex and I had a place too where he had camped as a boy. That's where we buried our wonderful dog, Stryder. Lovely area. Lots of memories.

No vacation for now. It is rainy season here and almost the start of school. I love the place Sagada up north.

I have never went very far for vacations. Most were spent camping out at a relatives house.

Unfortunately my traveling days are over. Our best trips were always to the Keys and Everglades.
