I have just been sorting through some coins belonging to a neighbour . I’ve been trying to find out how much they are worth. A lot of them are foreign do I’m guessing that they have come from holidays in the past. Some go back to the early 1900’s, and some from the 1980’s…out of circulation now. I have sixpence, thrupence, florin, shilling, two shilling, old penny, old half penny, halfpence, farthing. I will keep going over the next few days and see what I can find out, and ask if he wants me to sell, maybe on eBay.

I've been going through all the old coins I've collected over the years and making a list for Pretty. She won't need it until I'm gone, but will she use the list or just say "The heck with it all." and chuck them in the trash? I have no clue... Some of the coins are worth a lot of money... Some of them are only worth their face value. Some are gold collector's coins... Figuring out prices can be a pain in the tush, finding a buyer is an even bigger pain because it can take seemingly forever. *sigh* I'm not sure I'd do that much brain work for a neighbor. Good luck with it all.

@Traceyjayne I keep running into that, too. What do I list for her? If she can't get that amount later, I don't know what to tell her. I run into the most variables on the gold items I've bought and put back... Gold is a real pain in the tush!

@DaddyEvil making a list of the coins will be helpful. The name and year should be noted. They will change in value but it will be a big help to know those two things.

I can’t do much at the moment anyway so at least I’m helping . I’m trying a few different sites and the prices vary …. Some are worth a few pennies but it seems some could be worth more ….

@traceyjayne I always liked the Florin. Of course my kids haven’t a clue what they were but I still have a few and a few half crowns. What baffled me was remembering how many florins make a pound and the number of pennies in a ten bob note etc.

I admit I just about remember the pre decimal coins. It has been fun doing the research though.

@Traceyjayne I grew up in Malawi where the British system was used. In 1970 we went on holiday out of the country and when we came back we had been decimalised without telling us. Then we moved to Ireland to discover that here too we had been decimalised. No more 240 pennies in a pound.

@xFiacre how rude of them not to tell you ! I was only 5 when we were decimalised ….it didn’t hurt ! I vaguely remember the old coins ….but I am a lbs and oz girl when it comes to weight ….grams are only used when I HAVE to !

Good luck with your coins. We have a lot of coins to sell too but mostly mint rolls.

I would pay a visit to a numismatist. They might be able to point you in the right direction.

I will do that. We saw some coins for sale last weekend that made us think these may be worth more than we first thought

@Traceyjayne I know one thing, if they do have any value, I'd want top value.
