I'm Building a Big Beautiful Binder

Really, I'm very proud of it. It's very helpful and organized and I like it. My elderly mother-in-law, who is showing signs of Dementia, is moving into an independent living apartment next week on the campus of a Masonic Home Community that has nursing care, skilled care, Memory Care, etc. for her future transition if needed. I created a page each of all the information she will need as reference in her new apartment, such as nearest Bank Branch, nearest Grocery Store, Doctor on Site, etc. and took each separate page and put it in a clear protective sheet and put it all alphabetically in a 3-ring binder. I hope this will be very helpful for her as she's not doing too good with finding information or knowing what to do.

I hope she will be able to use it. Dad lived at home quite a while before his dementia got too bad, and I could tell his memory was slipping in regards to things that had been everyday and common for him. You are really smart for getting this set up for her.

I am sure it will be. Certainly it can help see more clearly through some of the haze. We do similar things with my mom, although we don't have a binder.

I hope that you added lots of graphics and pictures to keep it interesting, it may be necessary as her illness progresses. I made up a binder when we sold our last home. I had dividers for each room, and then a plastic protector with receipts for anything in that room-window dressings, flooring, roof, HVAC system, hot water tankless system, and appliances that we sold with the house. It was a real game-changer as we had several real estate agents, who showed the house, and gave feedback to our real estate agent.

I'm sure the binder will be a big help to her. I hope the move goes well and she's happy in the new apartment.

That's such a good idea. It's going to be really helpful for your mother-in-law. When my father was diagnosed with dementia, my little sister did something similar and my dad was able to figure things out. All of the important things he'd need to know was right at his fingertips. As he progressed and had full blown alzheimers, the list became less important. My sister got a large mirror and pasted his basic information to it. When he looked into the mirror, he could read his name, what he did for a living, where he was, who was with him, that he may not remember things. That sort of thing. She also put photos of my mom, all his kids and grandkids along with their names. He had some difficulties and still couldn't recognize his family. Once she put old music on, he seemed to come around but only temporarily. He eventually got cancer and his last month was in a care facility. You're doing a great thing for her.
