Oh the saga continues ….. Some may remember that Mom had trouble with the hot water ….a plumber came out and said it was the thermostat in the shower. We hadn’t had the shower that long but we took it back and got it replaced. The Mister replaced it. Still having the same problem…..Mom got a different plumber to come yesterday and he thought he just had to replace a part. He said he would order it this morning and ring Mom to let her know how much and when he could come to change it. He has just rung and said…..it means a whole new boiler !!! Goodness only knows how much that is going to cost ! Mom can well do without all this especially at the moment looking after me too.

@traceyjayne I suppose cold showers aren’t being considered as an option? Ours works fine but I chose cold over hot.

To save even more money, you could run outside when it rains with a bit of cheap soap.

@Orson_Kart Or just not wash. The man sitting across from me in this library has taken that option.

That's indeed a problem. The price might not be right.

I’m confused as to why you thought it was the shower when it’s now the boiler that is suspected. If it’s the boiler, then the whole of the hot water system would be affected. Is there no hot water in the kitchen or any other room with hot water taps? My shower is fed directly from the combi-boiler, and there is no separate thermostat, only a valve to adjust the flow between hot and cold. How old is the boiler? They should last at least 15 years, but you are often persuaded to replace early for no good reason.

We are only going on what the plumbers have told us. We think the boiler is about 15 years old. As Mom is not on any benefits it seems she doesn’t qualify for a free boiler through the Government. The first plumber said the thermostat in the shower so we got it changed. This plumber thought he could change a part but found out because if the age of the boiler it would be cheaper to replace it.

@Traceyjayne You want something reliable and at least your mum has had 15 years out of the old one. Come the winter, when it’s really needed, you’ll probably be glad you got a new one. It could be a cold one this year!

These 'fixes' are rarely cheap. But really, you just have to trust these guys.
