I saw some shooting stars last night!

I wished on them and they were not satellites (with apologies to Billy Bragg).
I read that it was the peak night to look out for the Perseid meteor shower, and since I am lucky enough to be out in the middle of the Welsh countryside away from light pollution and not surrounded by lots of buildings I decided to have a look. Of course I had to wait until it was dark, and even then it wasn’t properly dark as the moon was up and it is only just past full so the sky was actually more of a light grey than actually black. Still, I took the picnic blanket and went and lay in a field.
I could see quite a few stars even though the sky was so light, and over the course of ten minutes or so I saw three quite spectacular shooting stars, so that was pretty cool. I did see several satellites as well but they are nowhere near as exciting, and within half an hour patchy clouds had closed in.
Meteors should still be visible later in the month when the moon has waned, but they won’t be as frequent. And of course they are never as frequent as ‘they’ say they will be. Last night the information stated there could be up to 100 per hour, that would be three every two minutes on average, but I saw three in the first ten minutes and then no more for the next ten minutes, so later in the month I could be lying there for an hour and maybe see one. Still thinking about it – and whether to encourage Little One to stay up late and watch with me – they are a very cool thing to see.
Have you seen a shooting star? And if so did you make a wish?
Of course there was no way I could possibly get a photo, this one is from Pixabay

Yes, I've seen meteors. I find them utterly fascinating. I didn't know to wish on them.

That is so cool! While I remember vividly seeing a comet once, I have no clear memory of a shooting star. I just have a faint memory of sitting outside at night with my parents and sister and my mom telling me to “look”. So I don’t remember seeing it; just my mom talking about it and trying to gain my attention.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience!

I used to take Pretty down by the lake here and we'd park our car on a bluff and camp out in the back so we could watch stars without bugs getting to us... Several times we managed to see shooting stars while doing that.

I heard Tony Blackburn talking about this earlier ….he said he couldn’t see very much. I’m not sure where he was as I missed the first part of the video.
Which part of Wales are you in ?
