I really enjoy speaking in French to my gas station dude. He is from Algeria, where they speak Berber, French, and probably Arabic. Here in California, I hear Spanish and Tagalog all the time. But I rarely hear French, the language I learned in High School in Chicago. Are there languages you rarely use, but enjoy using when you get the chance?

No, but Spanish is so prevalent here, I understand some. I was talking to Chat GPT using a bit of Spanish the other day. My vocab is not very impressive though. I have studied French, in HS and college, but I never hear it, so I can't speak it. I was listening to a foreign movie the other day where French was the language. I didn't understand a word.. Of course I might have if they were speaking slowly.

I have said this many times: "Parlez lentement, s'il vous plaît."

Spanish, I had 14 units in college, but I could barely speak complete sentences. It sounds good to the ears and I would enjoy using it more often.

I love French and it's a language that I like to speak. I heard Swiss French a lot where I lived before, but it's ugly compared to French spoken in France. I like Spanish too.

@TheHorse Swiss French is spoken extremely slowly, slower rhythm and intonation and it incorporates some words from neighboring German. Canadian French is harsh, I understand them, our French friend says he cannot understand a word of what they say.

How do the Swiss make French sound different? Canadian French sounds "harsh" to me.

Most French people in Paris speak decent English. Not so in the smaller villages, though.

We have many rich languages. All are used in different areas of the country. Sanskrit is one of our classical languages. I'm now learning Sanskrit. It is a rarely used language, but there are a few people here who use it.I want to be able to talk to them in Sanskrit.

Bonjour mon ami I learned a little bit French and Japanese and that's all. I don't think it's good enough to have a conversation.

I'd enjoy using French more but it's not really likely to happen.

I stupidly took Latin in high school. The other choices were German (no thank you....too hard) and French. I should have taken French.
