Isn't the watermelon a needed part of summer? If there isn't watermelon, it's just not summer. But did you know about the 'yellow spot' or 'the ground spot'? It is a yellowish spot underneath the watermelon that shows that it has laid in the sun and ripened. Of course, there is also that dull and hallow thud when tapped. And, if it is extra heavy for it's size. All those are how to tell if the watermelon is going to be good and juicy. It full of fiber and very good for us.
I have been enjoying watermelon all summer. I wish we could get a good canteloupe but I hate to even try. I've been disappointed too many times.

I haven't even seen any cantaloupes in Walmart this year. We like one once in a while...

@celticeagle With cantaloupes and muskmelons, you should be able to smell them and that's how you know it's ripe.

@DaddyEvil .......I smell them and also check the stem. If it has snapped naturally it is probably ripe.

I used to get luscious cantaloupes for my in-laws. They could never figure out how I did it. I would smell the stem part of the melon. If it smelled like a sweet melon, it was ripe, if not...it smells "green".

..You can see if the stem has broken naturally or been cut. That's how I tell. And it has to have three colors. Green, tan, and yellow.

@celticeagle When I was a child we only ever got watermelon in summer. It was never around at other times. All the fruits have their season but now you can get most fruits all year round.

Watermelon really is the taste of summer! Thanks for the reminder about the yellow spot and the thud test .. that’s the best way to pick a good one.
