Today will be our only chance to buy souvenirs in Latvia
Our guide tells us to buy a Christmas ball which I’m assuming he means ornaments
Photo taken by me in Old Town Riga Latvia last night
I generally buy small pieces of local art or a a scarf or jewelry when I travel

@DaddyEvil Yes, I have seen people selling old coins on the tourist sites I have travelled. I don't have an interest on collecting these coins so never bought them.

@sjvg1976 I've got some from the USSR, China, Japan, Chile and Panama. (I'd have to look through my coins to know for sure if I have Indian coins.) My friend's company made stainless steel tanks and he traveled all over the world installing them for different companies.

When a friend of mine used to travel to other countries, he traded some of our money for some of theirs and brought some of it home with him when he returned. He always gave me some of it. I keep it in tiny Ziploc baggies I store in plastic bowls with lids on them. Some of the countries don't exist anymore.

I always tried to find fridge magnets that were about the place we were visiting. Pretty always looked for small knives that were different from anything else she already owned.
Once, she found a knife that buckled on her arm and covered it from wrist to elbow. It was in the shape of a scorpion and the raised tail was one knife and each claw (that hung just below her arm) were knives, too. It's pretty but unwieldy using it for anything.
Pretty has several plastic totes in our garage that are full of interesting knives.
I wouldn't want a Christmas ornament. I hope you find something that appeals to you.

@sjvg1976 Exactly and they stay on the fridge and out of the way of anything else. We use them to hang a new-to-us recipe that we want to try on the front of the fridge so it doesn't get lost. If we like the recipe, I copy it into a notebook of favorite recipes. If we ended up not liking it, we throw it away.

@DaddyEvil that's a good way to use the magnet. They look decorative on fridge.

I never had much space so I used to try to buy something that was actually useful, maybe some small ceramic item like a vase or jug, or wooden salad servers or something like that, or even clothing like a belt or scarf. Nowadays I have more space but I'm also very conscious of the fact I have inherited things that were obviously souvenirs from other people's holidays - my mother, her parents, my father's father, my mother's aunt and uncle. So I have various odds and ends that I just can't throw out, and I don't want to add to the clutter. And I still have things I bought years ago - I still wear a leather belt I bought on an exchange trip to Germany when I was 15! So I have basically stopped buying souvenirs. I let the girls buy things if they want!

Small art, scarves, or jewelry also make perfect souvenirs since they’re unique but easy to pack.

If the place is famous for some local art and craft, I love to bring that. Mostly when flying, I settle down on some fridge magnet for the convenience of carrying it back home.

I always buy a t-shirt for everyone with the name of the place on it.

I used to buy mostly fridge magnets but now I rarely buy souvenirs at all.

I've always bought magnets. My SIL would also send me some....she's traveled all over the world. They're small and relatively inexpensive. I have about 100. Hubby collected T-shirts and tiles.
