So, on my way home from my adentures in Culpeper I saw they have built a Dollar General market. It's about 10 miles from here or a bit more. I have heard about those..They sell produce in there, and other fresh things. The DG that is out here should do that. They would make a lot more money. So many people would shop there more often. It would be better than having to hoof it 8 miles to the Food Lion, but if you want produce either there or the Farmers Market is where you have to go.

I’d like a Dollar General Market too, and I know it would do well here since a Dollar General is right beside my complex. Make it a Market, and you’ve got a major clientele. A lot of people don’t have cars, and have to use the bus. Walmart is not within walking distance unless you’re an Olympic runner. So a Market would do phenomenal.

Yes, the issue with Dollar General though is their refrigeration is always breaking down. That could cause major problems.

As a little girl, I remember a few ''neighborhood stores'' that all carried some groceries and meats, milk and bread, etc. in every town. Usually looked like a little house in a way. I remember my grandma saying that they went by the wayside as larger stores opened up that carried more items to choose from. Then we got to the superstore era we are in now, Walmart, Costco, Sam's, big name chains, etc. and the little guys are gone. The Dollar General doesn't carry a lot of groceries, but they carry enough--and seem to be taking the place of the old neighborhood stores of years gone by. We have two Dollar General stores in close proximity. One is in constant turmoil, can't keep help, and is constantly being shut down by OSHA for having blocked isles of stock, etc. Drive a few miles down the highway, there is another one--it could honestly be a store used for a commercial. Every single thing is in place, the floors are spotless, even the parking lot doesn't have one scrap of trash. Neither one of those stores have produce. We do have one about 10 miles away that does, but in all honestly they can't keep produce in stock--they didn't allow enough room for it, and the demand is big in areas that have few stores.

I too have found Dollar Generals really variable. The one 3 miles from here is frequently low on stock. I prefer the one about a mile further because that store is well stocked. There is one about a half hour from here I have been in a time or two .That is a disaster with boxes blocking the aisles. It's a shame about those old grocery stores. Our supermarkets, and mega stores knocked those off. I was just reading an article written by a guy who was in Indonesia for several months. They seem to have the values we have lost along the way

@MarieCoyle They do have a little market here which is owned by a Sikh couple. They are nice and friendly, and once gave me free pudding. I don't go there very often though

The hometown feel of a small grocery is something many of us truly miss.

@snowy22315 I like it. It's nice not having to go to Marion.

Yes America needs to quit having so many food deserts. The nearest to me D G used to have one little fresh produce section way up front then they took it out. They still have some gallons of milk and a little cheese and processed meats.

That's going in the wrong direction. Where they put this one..is not really very close to anything, a bit like here. They should put one in the mountains. Some of the people there have to drive 40 miles to Roanoke.
