Question: What do you think of people who have tattoos?

I am sure some of you will not dare to approve of this matter. My mom used to keep on telling us to never have them on our skin. Then one time, my younger brother had it on his right leg. My mom was so furious when she saw it. As the eldest brother, I am to the rescue of explaining to my lovely mom that it is a trend. Besides, she cannot do anything anymore because it is done. yes, that is what the older people here think of tattoos But time changes, some are still skeptical about it because during those times, only people in prison had tattoos but not now. Nowadays, it is an art. An expression of yourself, and most tattoos have meaning for the person. I once liked to have one, but I tried henna first, which was the right move for me. When I got the henna tattoo, I realized I do not want to have a permanent one. But I respect those who have theirs.

I also tried the henna ones before. It was not for me, but I do like it at some point. For some untraditional elders, they are open to this idea.

@rakski One thing that my mom cannot turned down the idea because my father has it, too.

I would say I’m pretty neutral about it. Personally, I have to agree with your mom in the sense that I prefer to keep my skin clear of such things, no matter how trendy they may be. For me, there’s something nice about having a clean canvas and not worrying about how it might look years from now. That said, I also understand that for others, it’s a form of expression or something they find meaningful and fancy. Everyone has their own reasons and their own sense of beauty, and I respect that. If it makes someone happy and gives them confidence, then it’s their choice. So while I wouldn’t go as far as your mom in being furious, I do see where she’s coming from out of concern and love. At the end of the day, it’s all about respecting each person’s decision about what they want to do with their own body.

@Shavkat True, but if you asked me whether I would try it, I’d say no—I wouldn’t want anything permanently placed on my body. I do admire others getting tattoos, but they’re just not for me.

@rsa101 During my younger years, most of my university friends had their tattoos. The sad part is, they did in their own ways. I am grateful that I did not go along with them. If it happens, I will be in full regret because their tattoos were not good to look at.

I always put myself in the middle of something. It is better to be in this position not to hurt others' feelings. It can be an expression of art for some people, and I respect their opinionated statements about having them on their bodies.

I don't have any tattoos and don't want one on me but Pretty has a black lotus flower tattoo on her right foot she got her freshman year in college. I have piercings and so does she. Everybody is different and, other than some health concerns caused by ink under the skin, there's nothing wrong with having a tattoo.

Indeed. We have our own interest in certain things and can be supportive of them if that's what makes them happy. For my younger brother, I am sure that he has his own reason for having it on his right leg.

@Shavkat I'm positive she would have given herself a tattoo. I have a friend who has a tattoo of a tiger tearing through the skin on his back. It's beautiful work and Pretty admired it... She kept drawing different versions of it for years.

In the past, most elders think that people have tattoos came from prisons. In fact, they prisoners have their tattoos and evident when they go out. Thus, it is a misnomer for some people to believe on this matter. At some point, we need to educate them that it can be a trend.

I'm going to give you my honest opinion: it's not just a fad, but it's not an act of crime either.Rather, identity is all relative because there are people who take their bodies to the extreme by putting on so many tattoos that not even they can identify themselves. However, a tattoo means something to me but it doesn't identify me, for example, I am a teacher and I have tattoos that mean something deep to me.My elementary school students should not see my tattoos because it is not a bad thing but I do not want to promote any influence at an early age.I tell my children that when they are old enough they can do whatever they want with their bodies responsibly.I am also a lawyer and a tattoo does not diminish my IQ or my professional aptitude.

You have some point here. As for me, there are some local tribes that do have them. It is a part of their culture to have inked their skin to be a part of their tribes.

@Shavkat I think it's something cultural and tattoos with purposes should be something responsible, but in the end, everyone has their own way of thinking and is free to do it.

I used to be opposed to them more than I am now, but they have become so commonplace, it's almost unusual to see someone without one. I think they are fine so long as they are not overdone, gaudy, or foul. Some look rather good on some people.

My step son has his own tattoo parlour, he is very artistic and hugely successful….some of the tattoos he has done truly are works of art. He himself is widely covered in them too. I, however, do not like tattoos. Some people have so many you can not tell what they are and I always think ….it may look good now , but what about when you are old and wrinkly ! They won’t look good then ! At the end of the day it is personal choice. I just don’t like them.

I am amazed that some tattoo artists are good in doing this. Since it is becoming a trendy thing to do these days, many people still want to have them. As for me, I am with you with this concern.

That is what I think—a different story for having tattoos all over. I am not judging it, but it is not for me. I still respect if they claimed to be an art sake reason.

In the past I would also have a prejudice to the people who had tattoos. Now I change my mind. I don't really care about it and that's a personal choice I won't consider to have tattoos on myself as it's painful. Besides, I don't want to feel regretful when I don't like the tattoos and it's too difficult to remove it. If it's just like a sticker and I can have it for a day or two for fun.

I must say that I was supposed to have one. I was with my university's classmates. Luckily, I changed my mind because the tattoos that they had did not appear to be good ones.

What are the benefits of having a tattoo? There are some people who even want to remove it from their body when they are old.

I do not care for tattoos for me. It's none of my business if others want them. I do not judge a person differently because of tattoos. In extreme cases, I think it can be too much but it's their deal. A person with many or clearly visible tattoos must understand that it could limit some employment opportunities and that some people frown on tattoos, brands or piercings. To each his own. You do you, I'll do me.

You have a point that some employers do not want applicants with tattoos. It is indeed that I should mind my own business with regard to this concern. Who am I to control their preferences for having tattoos, right?
